Tried testing the issue on reported chrome version #71.0.3578.98 using Ubuntu 17.10 and Ubuntu 14.04 by following steps as per comment#0. Observed that "The best: Hoya Evo Antistatic" and "Hoya HD3" appeared in bold. Tentatively adding Blink>Fonts component. Attached screenshot for reference. @reporter: Could you please review the attached screenshot and let us know if anything is being missed here. Requesting you to confirm if the issue is specific to Ubuntu 18.10. Thanks.!

@swarnasree.mukkala Your screenshot looks good (bold text are indeed rendered as bold). Yes, I confirm that this is specific to Chrome 71 + Ubuntu 18.10, but note that the latest Firefox + Ubuntu 18.10 works fine (see "firefox.png" in my original report).

The text is bold as expected when viewing the page on Chrome OS 70.0.3538.110. Did it work in 70 on Linux?

>> The text is bold as expected when viewing the page on Chrome OS 70.0.3538.110. Did it work in 70 on Linux? I'm an end user and only have access to the latest version (71) of Chrome. And now I live in Windows 10 (I have dual OSes) as long as this problem persists.

As per comment#3, the issue seems to be related to Ubuntu 18.10. Tried installing Ubuntu 18.10, but facing an installation issue. Hence requesting someone from Inhouse team to check the issue on the Linux which is available there and help in further triaging of the issue. Thanks.!

jmukthavaram: Thank you for the test. I will install Ubuntu 18.10 in VirtualBox 6.0 in my Windows 10 and test again. Maybe the difference of test outcomes is due to the interaction between my hardware (Nvidia GTX 960) and Ubuntu 18.10.

OK, I've found the cause for the problem: If I install Ubuntu 18.10 in VirtualBox and select "English" as system language during installation, the resulting Chrome text rendering will be good (bold text indeed rendered bold), but if I choose "Simplified Chinese" as system language during Ubuntu 18.10 installation, the resulting Chrome text rendering will not render bold text for that test page (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/62033761). So the cause is Ubuntu 18.10's font configuration for Simplified Chinese language support. I will try using Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS instead. This bug can be closed now.
