This is a Haswell system -- it should be more than capable. The latest Firefox plays 60fps 1080p video without dropping any frames. Notice I disabled all acceleration and all the fancy new features, and it's still dropping frames. Please don't tell me to enable acceleration - I've done so. This is a terrible performance regression in the Chromium code.

Tried testing the issue on reported chrome version #72.0.3617.0 using Windows 7 by following below steps. Steps: ===== 1.Launched chrome. 2.Navigated to "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C28qipaYUyI". 3.Right clicked on the video and selected "stats for nerds". 4.Observed the Dropped frames value is 7/6364. Attached screencast and chrome://gpu details as a reference. @reporter: Could you please review attached screencast and let us know if this is the issue you are pointing to. Thanks.!

Chrome doesn't use HW-acceleration for VP9 in Windows 7 as you can see in your chrome://gpu log: VPx decoding isn't supported well before Windows 10 creators update.

Gentlemen, I have found the issue: It only happens when f.lux is running _and_ enabled. New steps to reproduce please: 1) Make sure f.lux is running 2) Make sure an f.lux profile is enabled (in my case 800k color) 3) Play aforementioned Youtube video in fullscreen, observe enormous amount of dropped frames. 4) Observe that the behaviour is not present in Firefox Admin: Can you please amend the bug title to: "VP9 Youtube Performance Stinks When f.lux Enabled" Thank you swarnasree

Thank you for providing more feedback. Adding the requester to the cc list. For more details visit https://www.chromium.org/issue-tracking/autotriage - Your friendly Sheriffbot

Hmm, I wonder if f.lux is causing us to take an expensive compositing path.

Dec 7
I tried running Chromium with "--disable-avfoundation" per this bug report: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=817007 It didn't help

I'll take a shot at reproducing this bug locally

I can't reproduce this on my Windows 10 (I disabled direct composition). I don't think f.lux changes Chrome's rendering path because on Windows7, we don't have direct composition or hardware overlay support. However, f.lux might change OS's composition path, and a previous flip might because a fullscreen copy. Can you also confirm if this also happens with the following two videos: http://crosvideo.appspot.com/?codec=vp9_60&resolution=720 http://crosvideo.appspot.com/?codec=h264_60&resolution=720 The first is a VP9 at 60fps with the same 1280x720 res as your youtube video The second the a H264 at 60fps with the same 1280x720 res. Just want to confirm if it's VP9 only or it's happening on multiple codecs.

It happens with _both_ codecs. Just make sure you switch to full screen mode. My resolution is 1920x1080. As soon as f.lux is disabled (it's still running though), the problem disappears. I won't say it's perfect in firefox with f.lux enabled, but it's definitely a lot better than Chromium.
,
Jan 3
Thanks for confirming it's not VP9 specific. Honestly I don't think we would want to change Chrome's rendering path so it can be compatible with a third party like f.lux. As I mentioned in #10, the issue is likely f.lux affecting Windows's compositing, which is out of Chrome's control.
,

Thanks for your efforts. Can you explain to me again in laymens terms please why this happens on Windows 7 and not Windows 8 or 10? I thought GDI was a thing of the past... Isn't Vista/7 similar in that regard to 8/10?
,
Jan 7
Win 10 has Direct Composition, so OS (Windows) might be doing a better job at compositing. Just an educated guess.
,
Jan 11
Per this post: https://forum.justgetflux.com/topic/6826/poor-performance-with-chrome-on-windows-7 Can you please drop the color temperature to below 1900K and see if you get the same problem? Thanks
,
Jan 11
I can't read the post "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable" but I tested with 1900K and don't see an issue. As I mentioned, Windows 10 with Direct Composition might be very different from Windows 7. Unfortunately we don't have Windows 7 in house any more for testing.

This problem is now fixed in the latest f.lux. In the f.lux options, un-tick "Use GPU for better quality with very warm colors". |
