Yep, we feel your pain. That's why we've been working on shiftfs for quite some time. Seth Forshee gave a presentation about shiftfs at LPC this year. He also has sent out a patchset. The discussion is tricky though since people seem to agree that having a solution purely on the vfs layer is preferable to a separate filesystem.
