I also noticed you have --ignore-gpu-blacklist. If you have turned that on recently, then it would have probably re-enabled WebGL.

If WebGL is still not working, I'm not sure why. It could have something to do with those X errors, but I think they're normal.

If it is working, please try starting chrome without --ignore-gpu-blacklist and sending the chrome://gpu report for that.

It seems most likely that your drivers are considered too old (Nvidia 340.104), but I didn't easily spot any software_rendering_list entries that would do that.

I installed some system updates (not 100% sure whether before or after comment 6), but I notice the version of Google Chrome is still exactly the same one as when I reported the bug.

If installing system updates fixed the problem, then the updates likely updated or fixed your driver installation. As kainino@ pointed out, the 340.104 driver is pretty old at this point and I would in general recommend you look for a newer one, but if things are working now then probably best to not touch it.

Thanks for checking. There are a few things that could have happened:

- An Nvidia driver update from e.g. 330 to 340 might have caused your GPU to be un-blacklisted. Although --ignore-gpu-blacklist should have been ignoring that anyway. It may have also fixed any crashes you were seeing.

- More likely, last time you saw this, Chrome's GPU process had already crashed 3 times, which disables WebGL until the next browser restart for security and stability. If you see WebGL break again, you can probably just restart Chrome to fix it. You can take a look at the log at the bottom of chrome://gpu while WebGL is still broken - it will probably show that there have been crashes.

If you can update the Nvidia driver, I would recommend it. I don't think your GPU is so old that it won't work with the newer drivers.

I have no idea why they haven't got updated automatically.
Though now that I think about it, I seem to remember manually updating them resulting in BRICKING my computer, so perhaps either they don't get updated automatically and that's good, or I made sure they wouldn't.

I learned the hard way that support for NVidia on Linux (or at least on Ubuntu) sucks.

Looks like you are running Ubuntu 16.04 on a laptop. The 340 drivers are set to default for old cards, though your GPU seems to be supported by the new 415 drivers according to the NVidia drivers page. It could be that the default entries on Ubuntu 16.04 are too conservative.

So first, updating the NVidia drivers manually is a pain and I don't recommend it. If you look for "Additional Drivers" in your dashboard, you can open a list of Ubuntu-supported drivers pre-packaged to choose from and have the installation happen automatically (without needing to close X). That list is in the same window that has the settings for update, your PPAs, etc.

The list of supported drivers is pretty limited though, so you would definitely want to add this official ubuntu PPA to have the latest drivers available:

If anything goes wrong, you can always boot in repair mode, remount your disk for read/write and use apt to remove the newer driver and reinstall the old driver. You can see the name of the packages from the PPA above. For example, if you install 415, but want to go back to 340 if the system doesn't boot:

$ apt remove nvidia-graphics-drivers-415
$ apt install nvidia-graphics-drivers-340
