Crash under --enable-hardware-overlays when toggling style on interval

Issue description

Chrome Version: 63.0.3239.83
OS: Linux

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Run Chromium with --enable-hardware-overlays flag
(2) Open HTML file contained in this gist: https://gist.github.com/kevinpschaaf/5a1145367f4255078664c3052a746994

What is the expected result?

  Background toggles on an interval

What happens instead?

  Crash occurs:

Could you let me know more about why this configuration is being used?  --enable-hardware-overlays doesn't do anything useful on Linux so it should be avoided.  Also Chrome 63 is very old, have you tried a recent version?
