The "What went wrong?" section might not be the cause of the problem, these are just the last lines from chromium's stderr, so I though it might be relevant. I would attach a file with the entire stderr output, but my browser crashes if I click the button. I uploaded it here: https://pastebin.com/raw/2W31QXhX

Did you try installing
"sudo apt install libcanberra-gtk"

There are a number of gtk errors related to that.
There is no package by that exact name, but after installing "libcanberra-gtk-module" the issue still stands. (libcanberra-gtk3-module was already installed.)
The stderr output still contains "Gtk-Message: 20:33:39.921: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"" as the first two lines, strangely enough.

Tested this issue on Debian rodete using chrome # 70.0.3538.110 . No crash was observed when attempting open file dialog.

@Reporter: Could you please provide 16 digit crash id if any from chrome://crashes to triage this further.

Thanks!
How do I enable crash reporting? It says: Crash reporting is disabled. Crash reporting is not available in Chromium. You have no recently reported crashes.

I tried searching in the settings and briefly on the internet, but could not find the option.

Crash reporting isn't available in chromium only chrome. You'll need to provide a stack trace using the instructions from wherever you got your chromium build from. (the chromium project doesn't really distribute chromium builds) but Debian and Ubuntu build it. And you'll need to get their symbols and get a dump from gdb.

As per C#9, Adding Needs-Feedback label.
Oh I didn't know all this. This sounds a bit too complicated, I just installed chrome instead and it seems to work fine. Thanks for your help though.

Thanks..!
