Issue descriptionDevice name: Pixel 2 XL From "Settings > About Chrome" Application version: 70.0.3538.110 and previous release Operating system: Android 9.0.0; Pixel 2 XL. Build/PQ1A. 181105.017.A1 URLs (if applicable): Steps to reproduce: (1) On a web page, use the "Show simplified view" option at the bottom. (2) Long-press a link, then select "Open in new Chrome tab". (3) Close the new tab, to return to the original tab. Expected result: After #2, nothing - other than the new tab being set up. After #3, return to original tab at the same position in the page and still in Simplified View mode. This is how it used to work. Actual result: After #2, you are taken immediately to the new tab. After #3, you do get back to the original tab, but you are reset to the top of the page and are no longer in Simplified View mode. Comment: I follow links in about half of the articles I read. The new behavior makes this unbearable.

Reminder M72 Stable is coming soon. Please review this bug and assess if this is indeed a RBS. If not, please remove the RBS label. If so, please make sure to land the fix and request a merge into the release branch ASAP. Thank you.

This is regressed in M70, not a blocker for M72.

+mdjones@, CCT optimizes for going back to the original page, by keeping the original page intact in its tab. However, visiting links in the simplified view became less usable. I don't have a simple fix with CCT. I have a few ideas: 1. When clicking "Open in browser" in the context menu, don't close the simplified view CCT. Tapping a link still closes the CCT and causes navigation in the original tab. I'm not sure if this would work though, since "Open in browser" could either open in the same app, or bring you to another app. 2. Alternatively we could add an item "Open in a new tab" in the context menu to open the link in the background tab. However, with modal CCT, it's not possible to access these background tabs, so this doesn't feel very useful. 3. Add "Open in browser" in the hamburger menu as an exit hatch to open Simplified View in a normal tab. This should behave the same as the non-CCT Simplified View, but it's hard to discover for the users. What do you think? BTW, I found a tricky workaround: after "Open in browser", if you choose a different browser (or different channel of Clank), tapping "back" closes the new browser and bring you back to the CCT. |
