Non functioning USB port on Pixelbook

Project Member Reported by rogerta@google.com, Nov 20

Issue description

Google Chrome	71.0.3578.21 (Official Build) dev (64-bit)
Revision	a8eaa26553c695bf6c33340d637886b3f1e2c6a9-refs/branch-heads/3578@{#282}
Platform	11151.11.0 (Official Build) dev-channel eve
Firmware Version	Google_Eve.9584.174.0
Customization ID	GOOGLE-EVE
ARC	5086868
JavaScript	V8 7.1.302.6
Flash	31.0.0.122

The left side USB-C port (when facing the computer in the normal operation position) of my pixelbook does not work. My security key does not work in that port, but it does work on the other port. Also, I cannot charge my pixelbook from the broken port but I can with the other port.

I am able to fix with a cold boot as described at https://support.google.com/pixelbook/answer/7690406?hl=en

However I very rarely power off my pixelbook, I usually just put it to sleep. I performed a cold boot yesterday to get the port working again and this this morning it no longer works. The pixelbook has been put to sleep and awakened several times sine then.

Happens to me frequently now, except on the right-side port. I seem to be able to "fix" it most of the time by just restarting with Esc+Refresh+Power button, then power off and on normally without loosing any locally stored data.
I am also having this issue with Pixelbook. I had this issue in September-October, 2018^. It seems like in the Settings > Power, the system recognizes the power source (and has a 'AC adapter' indicator at the right side of the battery percentage), but the tray icon doesn't show up the charging icon and would still show the 'last for * hours * minutes' notification (normally would show 'charging' or 'battery full').

I have check the logs at chrome://device-log and will show 'Received power supply poll signal.' when plug-in or pull-out the cable on the left side, so that the system recognizes the action. However, while reading logs extracted from chrome://net-internals, the 'power' file under the 'var' folder, it seems like the system doesn't recognize from there (will say something like 'battery at *%, showing as *% (discharging)').

I tried to charge with different cables and power sockets, different side of the cable (up, down, reversed, etc...) but seems like the system didn't recognize some of the sides (the pattern is random). It worked once when I tried to charge with the left port, but only once in hundreds of times of test.

^ - This happened when I switched to the dev channel, it was Chrome 70 at that time. A lot of people are also reporting this issue in the forums on the interlink. Some people indicated that the issue was solved by simply switch back to stable channel (of course after power-washing). But no luck for me.

(Sorry, I haven't contributed to this forum before, hope this helps in any perspective)
I had the same problem and I can confirm that the Hard Reset process described above also worked for me to restore fast charging in the left port. However, it only works in that port in *one* orientation; in the other, it's not detected at all.

To be specific:

- Before reset:
    left port: O1=slow-charge O2=slow-charge
    right port: O1=fast-charge O2=fast-charge

- After reset:
    left port: O1=no-charge O2=fast-charge
    right port: O1=fast-charge O2=fast-charge

(Where O1 and O2 are the first USB plug orientation and the opposite orientation, respectively.)

Please file feedback (alt + shift + i) when you experience this issue and before performing workaround (hard reset). Also if possible mention crbug.com/907112 so it can be properly routed to this issue.
