Issue descriptionBug 317161 has regressed. Scrolling vertically sometimes triggers the "back" gesture, which should only be triggered by sideways scrolling. See details in bug 317161 .

Related likely to bug 862693. That's assigned to spqchan who isn't going to be able to work on this.

Tried testing issue on latest stable #70.0.3538.110 using Mac OS 10.12.6 by following steps mentioned in issue id:862693 comment#0. Below are the observations noted while testing the issue. Observations: =========== 1.After making the window narrow observed that only one horizontal bar appeared that is on the left panel. 2.Using the touchpad while moving it to left, sometimes it navigates to the previously opened page(majorly observed when tried to move to left very quickly). Attached screencast for reference. jdarpinian@: Could you please review attached screencast and let us know if anything is being missed here and also if possible provide the chrome version as well. Requesting you to confirm if this is the issue you are pointing to. Thanks.!

That is related but not exactly the same issue. In bug 862693, as demonstrated in your video, history navigation is triggered by horizontal scrolling. This is expected in some situations, as the history navigation feature is intended to be triggered by horizontal scrolling. However, in this issue history navigation is triggered by vertical scrolling. This is never expected. Here is one way to tell the difference. You'll notice that when the history navigation gesture is activated, an arrow appears at the left or right side of the window. If you keep your fingers on the trackpad, you can drag this arrow to move it with your fingers. If bug 862693 is triggered, moving your fingers horizontally will move the arrow left and right, as expected, and moving your fingers vertically will not change the position of the arrow. If this bug is triggered, moving your fingers horizontally will *not* move the arrow, and moving your fingers vertically will move the arrow left and right, which is clearly a bug.

Can you please attach a video of the issue? Thanks in advance.

The original bug 317161 has my video of the issue. Although the video is from 2013, the issue is the same today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbJoXOTxxEk I suggest looking at bug 317161 for more context. Which is why I originally reopened it instead of filing a new bug.

Thank you for the video. I am trying to reproduce it on gmail.com, but unfortunately I can't :( Tested with a MacBookAir 11" on macOS 10.14.1 with Chrome Stable 70 and Chrome Canary 72.

The video makes it look easy to reproduce, but it is not. I cannot reproduce it on demand myself. However it continues to happen to me randomly, at a frequency of approximately once per day.

Unable to reproduce the issue on chrome version #70.0.3538.110 using Mac OS 10.12.6 and Mac OS 10.14 by following steps as per screencast provided in comment#8. Observed that while performing vertical scroll it did not navigate to the previously opened page. Note: Tried the issue on Wikipedia pages also, but unable to reproduce. Attached screencast for reference. Thanks.!
