Bluetooth speaking constantly dis/reconnecting to chromebook

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Connect bluetooth speaker (JLB Flip 3) 
2. Play audio from Youtube, Spotify etc in Chrome web browser on the bluetooth speaker
3. Allow playback to continue

What is the expected behavior?
Audio output to consistently come from bluetooth speaker previously connected. Only disconnecting when commanded to.

What went wrong?
Audio will switch between JLB Flip 3 speaker and built-in CB speakers and JLB is constantly disconnected (seemingly at random) throughout playback (sometimes disconnection/connection lasts for minutes, other times seconds).

It isn't an issue with the speaker, works as expected when connected to my phone. Only an issue with the CB that worked fine back in September when I used it last.

it now also no longer switches automatically to the CB speakers once it disconnects
