I think chrome's hardware decoding is limited to 7680x4320 when my gpu can actually hardware-decode 8192x4320. MS edge can hardware-decode this video just fine. mpc-be+youtube-dl can also play this video in dxva mode just fine.

biggsley@ Thanks for the issue.

Tested this issue on Windows 10 on the reported version 72.0.3610.0 and the latest Canary 72.0.3611.2 and unable to reproduce the issue by following the below steps.

1. Launched Chrome and navigated to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWB-ihgahe8.
2. Could observe that the video is playing smoothly and no issues are observed.
Attached is the chrome://gpu details.

Request you to retry the issue on a new chrome profile without any apps/extensions and update the thread with the observations.

Thanks..

you don't seem to be playing VP9 8K(8192x4320) version of the video. make sure you are playing video format 272 on right-click > stats for nerds. I can play vp9 7680x4320@60 just fine.

We only test up to 7680x4320
 https://cs.chromium.org/chromium/src/media/gpu/windows/dxva_video_decode_accelerator_win.cc?l=1477

The way we do this is kind of silly. +frank, ted do the d3d11 APIs let us query the actual max resolution or do we still have to do this silly walk of supported resolutions?
Cc: strobe@chromium.org
+strobe since I didn't know YT had gone up to 8192x4320. Are there any higher encoders strobe?

The max output has been at 8192x8192 since 2010 when we first added 4K support. I think YouTube should restrict its highres profile to FUHD and will suggest as much internally but it may be some time before that happens.
Okay, I just added the wrong test res then. Might have been the most my card supported at the time, but not sure.
re c#8: not that i found. one just tells the decoder what size we want. i've not found anything except the minimum 2d texture size, which is 16k.

I have the same problem on Canary 73.0.3666.1 on Core i5-760 and nVidia GTX 1050 Ti - MS Edge plays 8192x4320@60 YouTube videos smoothly, without any dropped frames, Chrome is very laggy, impossible to watch. And there are quite a lot of >8000 pixels videos among those marked as 8K.

I just wanted to give an example of 360 degrees 8192x8192 video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPMQTJbH7dU . In Edge it lags just a little bit on my PC, in Chrome it's totally unwatchable in 8K.

The following revision refers to this bug:
  https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src.git/+/4e07c7d635e307fe51188ba2398346a8e2a9cfbb

commit 4e07c7d635e307fe51188ba2398346a8e2a9cfbb
Author: Dale Curtis <dalecurtis@chromium.org>
Date: Thu Jan 10 03:48:10 2019

Add more YouTube 8K VP9 resolutions to Windows DXVA decoder.

Probably many decoders will support 8192x4320, but I don't know how
many will support 8192x8192 (which YT confirmed as cap), so add both.

The fix worked, it seems: in 73.0.3668.0, on GTX 1050 Ti and i5-760, 8192x4320@60 videos play smoothly, and 8192x8192@30 video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPMQTJbH7dU stutters a bit, quite similarly to Edge (maybe because 8192x8192@30 is pushing hardware decoder or videocard performance in 3D to the limit, I attached Task Manager screenshot).

Anyway, now it seems to be on par with Edge, thank you.

Great, yeah I think 8kx8k just isn't supported. Here's the full matrix from Nvidia: https://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-video-codec-sdk#NVDECFeatures
I ran one more test - I downloaded 8K vp9 video of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPMQTJbH7dU on SSD, by using Tampermonkey extension and https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/369400-local-youtube-downloader userscript, and played it in PotPlayer.

PotPlayer, surprisingly, allows to rotate viewport in 360 videos much like in browsers, and it played that video almost perfectly smoothly (with very very slight stuttering), and it says it uses D3D11 as well (screenshot attached), so 8192x8192@30 is definitely supported. But I understand that browsers do more than what a simple player does, and performance optimization is a major undertaking and is out of the scope of this bug report. And comparing Task manager CPU load in both screenshots, it can be seen that Chrome taxes my 8-year old CPU twice as much as PotPlayer (34% vs 17%), so it may simply be a CPU bottleneck.

Does it play smoothly if you use --enable-features=D3D11VideoDecoder,D3D11VP9Decoder ?
No, it's pretty much the same.

But it's really not bad in browsers now, it was unwatchable in Chrome (and CPU at 100%), now it's stuttering obviously from time to time (and CPU at ~30%), but still very watchable.

And it looks like the inside of the sphere, on which 360 degrees video is projected, has higher polygon count in Chrome than in PotPlayer (look at letter "s" in PotPlayer screenshot in comment 16 - it is distorted - that does not happen in Chrome). So GPU has to do more complex task in Chrome, and in PotPlayer there was no sound, which is 3-dimensionally located in this 360 video (I didn't download audio file), and PotPlayer didn't have to download stream from network. So overall, Chrome had a bit more difficult job to do, which might explain (not that big) performance difference and higher CPU and GPU loads in Task manager.
Well, in theory, 8192x8192@30=8192x4096@60. So, if it was a plain 2d 8192x8192@30 video, chrome would play it just fine now, I think.
Yes, if I open the video stream in Chrome via link given by userscript, instead of saving it, it plays smoothly, with low CPU load (7%).
