"Hard lock" button is confusing

Project Member Reported by khorimoto@google.com, Nov 13

Issue description

Repro:
(0) Enable Smart Lock.
(1) Lock device.
(2) "Lock" icon starts spinning; click/tap it.

This lock represents the "hard lock" button, which essentially cancels the SmartLock unlock attempt and forces the user to enter their password.

However, this is not obvious - the user isn't alerted to what this button does, and the message which appears after clicking the button isn't clear: "Your Chromebook is locked for security. Manually enter your password to continue."

We should investigate how to communicate this to the user more effectively and/or change this paradigm.

Thanks for filing this Kyle. I've been wondering about this "hard lock" paradigm for a while.

Why does this notion of "hard lock" exist? If the user wanted to disable Smart Lock, I'd assume they would navigate to Settings and turn it off. Even more confusing to me is that this hard lock only persists while the lock screen is visible -- the next time the lock screen is shown, Smart Lock can be used normally again. Was implementing this hard lock paradigm a Security requirement?
The hardlock button exists as a privacy/security escape hatch. It doesn't have to exist in its current form (e.g., rethinking the entire Smart Lock UX could expose this functionality some other way), but my understanding is that the functionality must exist.
