Issue descriptionChrome Version: <From about:version: Version 70.0.3538.76 (Official Build) (32-bit) <b>Chrome OS Version: <From about:version: Platform x.x.x.x></b> Chrome OS Platform: <ASUS C100PA> <b>Network info: <network, encryption type, router model (if known)></b> Please specify Cr-* of the system to which this bug/feature applies (add the label below). Hello, since the update to the above chrome version, every time I press CAPS LOCK an annoying pop up appears to tell me that it's on but it takes ages to disappear and covers up what you are writing (it's particularly annoying when using Whatsapp Web). It did not happen before and from what I understand there is no way I can turn it off. Steps To Reproduce: (1) Press CAP LOCK (2) Chrome OS pop up notification comes up (3) It takes a while to disappear on some sites/apps Expected Result: Actual Result: How frequently does this problem reproduce? (Always, sometimes, hard to reproduce?) Always What is the impact to the user, and is there a workaround? If so, what is it? Annoying and no work around Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screen shot or log if possible. For graphics-related bugs, please copy/paste the contents of the about:gpu page at the end of this report.

In the Chromebook Help forum, we occasionally hear from users whose typing methods rely on using capslock as a toggle instead of the Shift modifier. Most have remapped Search (or other keys) to act as capslock. Example, to type "John Smith", they would use this keystroke sequence: <capslock>j<capslock>ohn <capslock>s<capslock>mith Here is a recent thread https://support.google.com/s/community/forum/465605/search/query%3Dcapslock/thread/548020 Similar posts on the old Chromebook Central forum https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topicsearchin/chromebook-central/capslock%7Csort:date Most attempts to counsel users to avoid that typing method have failed.

Hi I understand what you are saying about the shift key but have you ever wonder why 'Most attempts to counsel users to avoid that typing method have failed.' Perhaps if think of a standard keyboard it would? Also if you're an old lady like me and learnt to touch type on a typewriter, it too may answer this. I have had my Chromebook for about 5 years and up until now this notification has never bothered me or interrupted my work, however since that last date it has...in fact it's not just the CAPS LOCK its most notifications, they linger for far longer than before have outstayed their welcome. Before they would just close off now I have to do it. I have had a go with the shift key but it would mean unlearning 30 years of typing on a keyboard, which let's face it, isn't going to happen. And unless other keyboard change their layout most people will not adopt that as the standard way to type. Anyway, thank you for at least trying to offer a solution.

Though judging by what I've just read, it's not typing lessons I need but proofreading hahhahaha!

Just purchased a Pixelbook and was starting to use the Linux Apps functionality to do some development work. In setting up the PATH environment variable in my shell I too came across this issue. Whilst having to learn alt-search for the CAPS LOCK feature is not a pain, the notification is. I am not aware of any other O/S that pops up a notification to let you know that you have turned on caps lock. It doesn't notify me when I switch it off :-) In my case it covered up exactly where I wanted to type and I either had to close it or wait for it to disappear. Not a huge issue but perhaps an indictor in the system tray would be more appropriate.

I'm seeing some complaints from user feedback: https://listnr.corp.google.com/report/85836337574 - Request to allow users to mute the notification, or to add back the taskbar icon and remove the notification https://listnr.corp.google.com/report/85796371003 https://listnr.corp.google.com/report/85842116438 |
