Issue descriptionChrome Version: 70.0.3538.76 One the Chromebook Forum and Social, we are seeing an increase of threads with One Note and Spotify crashing or forcing a restart on M70. I have included a few feedback reports as well as our forum links. I should mention I'm having the oneNote crash/reboot on a Samsung Chromebook Pro.
,
Nov 12
One note is rebooting c302 too...
,
Nov 19
My Samsung Chromebook Pro is rebooting almost every time I open OneNote. I powerwashed it and removed non-essential android apps.
,

This is a huge problem for me. OneNote is a large part of my daily use and small general things make my Samsung Chromebook Pro crash and restart.
,
Nov 22
same here... im getting very disappointed about chromeos stability....
,
Nov 22
Is there any other way to alert a dev about this? I'm getting aggravated by the lack of triage and ownership.
,
Nov 23
Thank you for all of the feedback and we are looking into this from an internal bug.
,
Nov 29
I am also experiencing this issue on my Samsung Chromebook Pro regardless of what OS channel I try.
,
Nov 29
@lordmorp... so, it's even happening on Dev (Canary)? That's disappointing. However, I'm on beta and OneNote doesn't crash nearly as much. Although, PowerPoint did the same thing a few days ago :/
,
Nov 29
@david....I just tried Dev again, but not Canary. Crashed almost immediately
,

For @google.com folks, there is an internal bug tracking the One Note crashes which seem to be kernel issues: b/119427043 The feedback reports listed above are only for One Note, but the description mentions Spotify as well. Is Spotify also causing device restarts? If so, crash reports from users experiencing this would be nice to confirm this is the same issue or not. If you are using Spotify and have a system restart, please go to chrome://crashes, upload crashes, and post crash IDs for us to look at.
,
Dec 1
@elijahtaylor if it is a Kernel issue, where does that leave those of us with the Samsung Chromebook Pro? Any idea when this will be fixed? Should I be looking for another laptop? (Samsung Plus / Pixelbook)? I was using OneNote a lot. Now I have to use the webversion which can be an issue.
,
Dec 2
First didnt get crostiny, now one note and spotify android apps restart the chromebook (i got the chromebook to take notes on one note) and now after the last update, my battery lasts of that it lasted before !@#$% ChromeOS
,
Dec 6
I've tried Stable, Beta, Dev, and Canary. OneNote reboots my Samsung Caroline, usually when changing pages. When I open OneNote up after the reboot, I've been signed out of my outlook.com account and have to relogin. Please address. I'll be happy to provide whatever files/logs you may need, all you need to do is ask.
,
Dec 6
aidrees@google.com elijahtaylor@chromium.org I'm not asking for code commits or anything, but can you please just let us know that this is in process? This is a huge ongoing issue for many people, and I think we'd like to know how long we have to wait for a fix to necessary functionality.
,
Dec 6
I've thought about changing to a different Chromebook since it seems to be a Chromebook Pro issue.
,
Dec 8
Just got the update to Version 70.0.3538.110 (Official Build) (64-bit) and there's no change.
,
Dec 8
Same. Briefly hopeful, and then it crashed. On Sat, Dec 8, 2018, 4:40 PM joshua.l… via monorail < monorail+v2.1513556910@chromium.org wrote:

Tried canary again, still got a crash within a minute or so of using Onenote.

Dec 9
Dear team, is this bug going to be addressed? I basically bought my Chromebook for OneNote... I want to Know so I can think about selling it... Thanks.
,
Dec 9
Since this issue seems to be specific to the Chromebook Pro,perhaps bugging Samsung would be in order. I posted over there two or three months ago. Not very much discussion about the problem. As far as I’ve seen, most other Chromebooks are fine.
,
Dec 9
It affects c302 as well (same hardware and kernel) but chromebook plus v2 with m3 cpu and kernel 4.4 seems to be fine
,
Dec 9
Thanks @dainel. I’ve been thinking about moving to a different Chromebook.
,
Dec 9
Me too, but i'm not very happy with the support... Remember c302 and Samsung pro are premium chromebooks, the best selling in amazon is c302 for me... new chromebook will be same problems in the future. i tired installing arch linux 2 days ago but there was no suspension and no sound.
,
Dec 9
Any way to go back to M69?
,
Dec 9
you can flash it with a recovery pen drive but it will upgrade if you reboot
,
Dec 10
I'm also having this problem. Samsung chromebook pro reboots if I try to run onenote and instagram. I haven't tried spotify. ChromeOS 69 and the current stable v70 - same thing. I've tried powerwashing. Extremely frustrating as this is a new computer for me.
,
Dec 10
I'm having the exact same problem. The problem seems to occur whenever OneNote tries to "sync" this is my guess as sometimes it will be working fine in a page but as soon as it tries to sync boom gone. I even changed the settings to sync only when page opened vs "download all files and images for notebook" but that doesn't help. Even a small sync causes the issue. I only bought this to take notes on onenote. The online version is horrible since the keyboard keeps popping up ie I can't use the stylus. Google keep lags about 10-15 seconds behind the stylus vs onenote which actually feels like I'm using a stylus. I'm also willing to provide any info you need to speed up resolution. Note I don't have spotify running at all so that could help remove that confounding factor.
,
Dec 10
Just wanted to point out a couple more things on my report of this issue. I too have not had Spotify installed on my Chromebook with OneNote. Second, I've been able to reproduce the crash when not signed in to my Microsoft account, so I think that rules out syncing.
,
Dec 10
FYI, I've been running the beta version (M71), but the issue is still there. @s.ghazip, I believe Squid still works (if you are interested I can test it out more fully). Squid allows you to take handwritten notes, imports PDF, etc. I don't think there's cloud-sync, but the handwriting, I think, works better than OneNote. I moved to OneNote because I also use a Windows 10, and Mac from time to time and wanted to be able to sync everything. Squid didn't do that (at least not then). Squid is a paid app, so if you (or anyone is interested), let me know and I'll check it out to make sure it still works. I'm wondering about moving to a Chromebook Plus (m3). Missing OneNote app access.

Hello, Thank you all for your feedback and comments. As you can see from our earlier comments, we are investigating this through an internal bug and will let you know once we have more information to share. Thanks, Alisha

upgrade to chromeos 71, still rebooting with one note.

If I'm following the chromium gerrit correctly, it looks like a fix was merged on the 20th, the same day the dev channel was updated. I think the update came out too soon though, because I didn't see the commit in the changelog. So, crossing my fingers, that it shows up in the next update. The link to the gerrit commit is a few posts up in this thread.
,
Dec 26
Has the change been verified to fix the issue? I can mark merge approved for M72 if we know it fixes it.
,
Dec 26
@dgagnon It is not fixed yet, as I'm on the dev channel and I can still make it crash. I'm waiting for the next update to come out, as I don't think this commit made it into the latest release.
,
Dec 27
@lordmorp I think they're referring to internal test builds, not dev channel releases.
,
Dec 27
@joshua could be....i'm not a developer, so not really up on this bugtracker lingo. I was worried about it being marked fixed prematurely.
,
Jan 2
I wouldn't expect to see the fix on M71 (per #46) since the merge was never approved. Not likely this will be approved for M71 given release timing on non-verification on M72.
,

This is a huge issue! Onenote crashes the Samsung Chromebook Pro! What is the ETA on the fix. This is a huge issue that should be resolved ASAP!
,
Jan 4
Hi, are steps being taken to verify the fix in M72 and/or ToT? Is there even a fix? We're going to miss M71 if this isn't resolved soon...
,
Jan 4
hoegsberg@ Do you think we can get your fix verified soon?

Ping on this bug again to see if the fix can be verified soon so we can consider the merge.

@kbleicher @hoegsberg @djmm Is this merged to the newest update that just rolled out? I'm on 71.0.3578.127 with caroline. I haven't had a restart in a couple minutes now, but I don't want to get my hopes up and lose data.

I bought my c302 for note taking with onenote and programing with crostini. Since is a flagship and most sold I expected good service. After waiting for months I solved the problem by selling the devices. On the way I got rid of every chrome, now I'm using alternative browser and installed vanilla android on my phone. Thanks google.
