Assuming this is CUPS. If it is not, CUPS folks can reassign.

Can you tell me a little more about how you set up your printer with your chromebook? Also, when you say duplex is unavailable, you mean that Two-Sided is missing in the print dialog.
Correct, I have no option to request two-sided printing from the print dialog in Chrome. Furthermore, I've tried to force the printer to do two-sided printing from within the printer menu, and that seems to be being ignored.

The printer natively supports Cloud Print, and I set it up following Brother's Cloud Print Guide (https://support.brother.com/g/b/manuallist.aspx?c=hk&lang=en&prod=mfc9330cdw_us_eu_as&flang=English&type3=459&type2=85)
If I try to print from Android, the two-sided option is greyed out.

For what it's worth, I added this printer via CUPS as well, and also don't get two-sided as an option.
Sanity check - does duplex for this printer work on Linux with CUPS? It should given the 'D' in the model name.
Yes, from the print dialog of a native app on Linux, I get two-sided printing as an option
