Register missing Better Together user policies on Admin Console |
||||||
Issue descriptionUser greg@depasse.us is an admin at their organization and reports not being able to allow Instant Tethering. User is CC'd. (Originally reported in crbug.com/898243). Greg, thanks for reporting this issue. Similar questions for you as for the previous bug: can you find the option "InstantTetheringAllowed" [1] in your Admin Console? If so, can you successfully configure it? When you try to enable it on a device, can you successfully find the option to enable the feature? 1) https://cs.chromium.org/chromium/src/components/policy/resources/policy_templates.json?l=11337

I have manually confirmed that the following policies do not appear to end-users in Admin Console: a) SmsMessagesAllowed b) SmartLockSigninAllowed c) InstantTetheringAllowed Note: EasyUnlockAllowed has been registered, and does not require any attention. It shows up in admin.google.com as "Allow Smart Lock on Chrome device". The necessary change is not a chromium change, and is therefore not tied to any milestone. I'll be reaching out to enterprise folks who need to manually add these policies to the Console.

Hi - Has there been any communication with the enterprise folks (or a ticket that I should track with them)? I'd like to get Instant Tethering and Messages working.

Hi Greg, apologies for the lack of updates. We're actively working with the enterprise team to register these policies on admin.google.com. I unfortunately do not have an expected time for those to arrive, but I will post on this bug when I have any updates.

Is there any chance that as part of this effort, someone is able to actually do a comparision of enterprise policies that are listed (espesically ones that default to diasbled) in Chromium but don't have an associated option in the admin console? I know that I've run into others.

Great question. I'll ask around and hopefully have an update on that as well.

The enterprise team has confirmed that they are looking into improving the process around this registration issue. They've explained that it's not always as trivial to register policies as it is for these ones, so a fully automatic solution isn't feasible. In any case, this process should become easier for most developers in the future.

The enterprise issue is that there are a bunch (this bug is one of many examples I'm sure) of a policy being set and enforced for enterprise customers without a corresponding option in the admin panel. All I was looking for to start was someone to do an audit to find which policies don't have an option in the admin panel. Then open bugs for those and figure out how to address them (automatic/manual or fast/slow etc, depending on the complexity. The first step is to identify the problem. Thank you!

Hi Ryuta, Jesse has been leading this effort recently, but he's OOO until next week. We can circle back on this bug then and ask Jesse what the status on this bug is. |
