On-screen Keyboard Keeps Showing Up in Tablet Mode when using Chrome app

Project Member Reported by ryutas@chromium.org, Oct 22

Issue description

ChromeOS version: 69.0.3497.9
ChromeOS device model: Lenovo N23 Yoga
Case#: 17127302

Description:

- Put the device Lenovo N23 Yoga touchscreen Chromebooks in tablet mode (folded completely)
- Deactivate the on screen keyboard: Select “Start” > “Settings“, Choose “Ease of Access“, Select “Keyboard“, Set “On-Screen Keyboard” to Off”.
- Play an interactive game, example: http://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/
- on-screen keyboard keeps on popping up even though the game has no text fields that could've triggered it (check the video in the drive), customer said it also happened on an iStation Chrome app

Steps to reproduce:

1.Using a touchscreen Chromebook, launch Chrome browser and go to http://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/
2. Click "Sign-in now"
3. Enter logins
4. Click on Play Now > Select a character
5. Drag the character anywhere and on-screen keyboard will keep on popping up
6. Hide the on-screen keyboard then it will re-appear after a couple of seconds

Current Behavior / Reproduction: On-screen keyboard keeps popping up even though a text field isn't tapped during tablet mode on the Chromebook

Expected Behavior: For the on-screen keyboard to not appear when on tablet mode when text fields are not tapped

Additional information:
- happens on any users who use their touch-screen Chromebooks
- Wiping-re enrolling does not solve it
- Within the games it appears through the whole game not only at a specific stage
- When the keyboard is displayed, if the user starts typing does the application react in some way? -> No entered characters appear on the game screen, nor is there any other effects on the game screen that I have noticed.
- In standard mode (not folded) it works fine.

Adding videos from the customer to https://drive.google.com/open?id=1y9uxoGrgQbpmaJeWJMbpmhIm6RwlAgCT showing the same issue happening while playing other games

- "Copy of istationTablet.mp4"
- "Copy of istationTablet2.mp4"

Points confirmed:

- keyboard kept popping up in tablet mode
- keystrokes entered on the on-screen keyboard has no effect
- on-screen keyboard doesn't pop up on standard mode (when device isn't folded into tablet mode)
- Reproduced in Incognito mode
- There is actually no extension installed on the machine
(we decided to use the test user without any force-installed or manually installed apps/extensions for this investigation)
* I think that "Deactivate the on screen keyboard" should only apply to the accessibility keyboard - it doesn't make any sense to actually disable the on screen keyboard in tablet mode, since it will make the machine unusable. We probably need to rename this text. shend@, thoughts?

* We should find out why the keyboard is opening when no text fields are selected, and why it doesn't work.
Yeah we definitely shouldn't make it possible for users to deactivate the (non-a11y) virtual keyboard for the reason you mentioned. Kiosks can still do this though via a device policy.

No strong opinion about renaming. The menu item is under the accessibility settings, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I haven't looked into the actual bug yet, but usually in these cases there's actually some hidden input field that the app uses to gather keystrokes.

Thank you for looking at this.

"I haven't looked into the actual bug yet, but usually in these cases there's actually some hidden input field that the app uses to gather keystrokes."

That actually what I was suspecting too... But as the problem happens in 2 games it might be something else...
I agree with Comment 7, and I was not able to reproduce the issue on a test Chromebook (touchscreen).

Any updates on this will be appreciated. Btw, I own the case that generated this report.
Hello, just checking if there are updates on this? Anything is appreciated. Thank you so much.

Is there any update that can be shared with the customer?

Hmm, tranbaoduy@ is OOO. I can take a look.
Were there any changes to the app since the bug report? I can't seem to repro on Chrome 73.0.3662.0. I've attached a video.

Regarding #12, two questions:

1. Have you tried to repro it on Lenovo N23/300e? It MAY be specific to Lenovo.
2. Customer is unable to install v73 at this moment because he has no access to Canary channel. Even if he had the access, waitig for it to become Stable is too long. Is it possible to integrate the fix into current Beta version (72)?

Customer has confirmed the issue is reproducible in v72.

Thanks, I'll check in M72.
I just checked on 72.0.3626.49 (dev) and I can't repro. In the video, the user was able to get a cursor to appear on the screen, but I can't seem to get that. How do you get the cursor to show up?
