When attempting to use Hangouts Extension in Canary, cannot sign in

Reported by sass.j...@gmail.com, Oct 20

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/72.0.3586.0 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Install Google Chrome Canary
2. Sync google account with Canary
3. Start Hangouts Extension
4. Hangouts opens a window which says the following: "Sign in to Chrome to get started. Learn More."
5. Click "sign in"
6. A new window opens up with the following address: hangouts.google.com/webchat/blank?undefined&pli=1

What is the expected behavior?
Most preferable: Google Hangouts opens without the need to sign in, since I've already synced my account with Chrome.

Secondary: I click "sign in" and it takes me to a google sign in web site.

What went wrong?
Unsure why this isn't working. I can use hangouts in chrome stable. It looks like a redirect on the sign in link isn't working properly.

WebStore page: Google Hangouts Extension 2018.515.419.1

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 72.0.3586.0 Channel: canary
OS Version: 6.1 (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2)
Flash Version: 31.0.0.122 PepperFlash\31.0.0.122\pepflashplayer.dll

This is my first time using Canary. I'm trying Canary out because the Hangouts extension for Google Chrome Stable has stopped making/receiving phone calls on my Windows 7 platform. I was told to try Canary instead.

I am willing to help implement or develop anything which needs to be done. With the advent of the Hangouts App disappearing, and the lack of phone support on the extension, I am no longer able to use Google Fi or Hangouts as a phone from my desktop. I can still use hangouts.google.com when disabling the extension, but that's not a tenable solution due to a lack of desktop integration.

In step 6, one thing to be added: the new opened window is blank, and no further actions occur. I feel like this is a misdirected link.

sass.joel@ Thanks for filling the issue...

Tried to reproduce the issue on reported chrome version 72.0.3588.0 using Windows 7 & 10. Attaching screen-cast for reference.
Steps:
---------
1. Launched reported chrome
2. Followed the steps as mentioned in comment #0
As we are able login with previously synced profile also able to make calls on Hangouts

@Reporter: Could you please check the attached screen cast and please let us know if anything missed from our end and can you please upgrade to latest canary and verify this issue with fresh profile that is not having any extensions and apps or reset all the flags. Let us know whether issue still persists.

Thanks.!

I am upgraded to the latest Canary (Version 72.0.3608.0 (Official Build) canary (64-bit)) and prior to that update, I was getting the same as the original poster.

Now, however, I'm getting slightly different results. See Attachment: "Hangouts Ext On URL Bar with scroll-over Message.jpg"

If I dbl-click on the grayed out Hangouts icon, it launches (See attachment: "Hangouts Window.jpg" and if I click on the Try Again button, the green circle around the hangouts symbol spins like it's processing (for ~40 seconds) but then nothing happens and the same window comes up.

If you don't click on the Try Again button, it waits about 10 seconds and starts "processing" again all on it's own. Then after about 35 seconds, it stops and does not start again on it's own. I let it sit for over 3 min. total. BUT, as I typed this, it did start "processing" again on it's own. But nothing resolved and the same window ultimately came up again.

Thanks!

And I just realized as I was cleaning up the windows, I did get another window but not sure when it appeared or was added to... It's attached.

Hope it helps. Thanks

phanindra.mandapaka,

Taking a look at the steps you'd demonstrated, I am not seeing the process I'd described in the initial report.

What I am seeing is "hangouts notification" being utilized, and then you are going to the hangouts.google.com website. Definitely not what I am having problems with.

The Chrome extension I am referring to is "Google Hangouts" version 2018.1108.1646.1, Extension ID nckgahadagoaajjgafhacjanaoiihapd

Please re-check steps listed above.

Tried testing the issue reported chrome version #72.0.3586.0 on Windows 7 by following below steps.

Steps:
------
1. Launched chrome.
2. Signed into account and synced the account.
3. Installed the extension "Google Hangouts"(nckgahadagoaajjgafhacjanaoiihapd).
4. Observed that the hangouts got signed in automatically, unable to find any sign in page.
Note: As we cannot check the earlier versions of canary, hence checked the issue on equivalent chrome version.

Attached screencast for reference.
@reporter: Could you please review attached screencast and let us know if anything is being missed here.
Thanks.!

I watched the screen cast and the first thing I noticed is that in Canary (Version 72.0.3612.0 (Official Build) canary (64-bit) Current!) my Hangouts icon is not green... it's grayed out and when I hover over the blue box w/ the ? mark, it says "Loading Error" as the status. See 1st attached.

Also, in watching the blue box, it periodically changes to what look like three little dots which indicates that it's trying to connect and when I hover over it, the status says "connecting". See 2nd attached.
