change default to open files using non-native programs

Reported by jennifer...@gmail.com, Oct 16

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS aarch64 10895.56.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/69.0.3497.95 Safari/537.36
Platform: Google_Bob.8785.262.0

Example URL:

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. download a document
2. automatically opens in word online
3. download to system
4. open MS word and open document in that program

What is the expected behavior?
I would like to be able to set the default behavior when clicking downloadable links to be able to open them in programs such as MS Word or Powerpoint by default.

What went wrong?
Many of my word documents (and powerpoints) do not show necessary information that shows in programs such as MS Word or Powerpoint. I am then forced to spare the extra minute (for EACH file) to download it to my device manually and open it within the program in order to view it properly, which takes up more time than I'd like if I'm in class and needing to quickly open files.

Did this work before? No

Chrome version: 69.0.3497.95 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10895.56.0
Flash Version: 31.0.0.108

If the functionality to change default behavior like this is added, I may be able to continue using ChromeOS for my academics, because at this time, with the number of files I download regularly, this has become a big issue I have with the OS and have since considered an equivalent windows machine. Thank you!

I'm not following. In your steps to reproduce the problem, it seems like things are being opened in word online. In your description, it sounds like docs are being downloaded and you don't want to download them. Could you please clarify what is happening, and what you actually want to happen? Thanks!
mmenk@chromeium.org I think its a suggestion.

jenniferannjakubowski@: could you elaborate on "many of my word documents (and powerpoints) do not show necessary information that shows in programs such as MS Word or Powerpoint"? Do you mean your documents may not have necessary information for the system to recognize it's a MS/PP document or something else? It would be nice if you could upload a sample document. Thanks!

Do you have the same issue on Windows Chrome? Or it's on ChromeOs only?

Removing network label, since this doesn't sound like a network issue.
