The default icon for an extension that has no icon is a gray box with a letter in it. This makes the extension look inactive. I had no idea an extension was active on many pages that I visited.

So it seems like there are two issues here:

1) Default icon is gray which looks inactive

and

2) Gray icons look inactive

Solving (2) would also fix (1) presumably.
