It IS malware.
Somehow it was able to get on your computer, maybe go.google or XP 2008
I had the same problem, Chrome not working yet firefox and ie8 working.
My first scan with Malewarebytes revealed some Maleware
But 2nd and 3rd scan revealed some too.
After the 4th scan, Chrome was back up and running.

MY SOLUTION:

Under "Clear Browsing Data" I checked "Empty the Cache" and "Delete the Cookies" for
"Everything". That fixed it. I didn't try it, but I wonder if it would have still
failed in an incognito window. I imagine not since it seems to be a caching problem.

Comment 37 by Deleted ...@, Nov 8 2008

I am getting this message (Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error) too, when
logging in to my ftp server. First time, when i log, it asks password(i have the
setting on not to save passwords), after that it keeps giving this message. It
doesn't even ask password, when i restart the browser. Although it asked once, when i
changed my language to english, to make the screenshot. Deleting the cookies and
emptying the cache did not help too. I see on my ftp server log, that Chrome logged
in, got the directory list and then disconnected:

Taking these to triage.

Comment 39 by jon@chromium.org, Nov 11 2008

Labels: -Area-Misc Area-BrowserBackend Mstone-X
Status: Assigned
Summary: Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error.
There are a number of causes for this problem that are external to Chromium. If you are seeing this
error you should investigate the following:

1. Do you have an Anti-Virus software package that blocks applications from reaching the network.
Vista's built in firewall and most modern firewall/virus software does this for you. Unfortunately,
many of them don't recognize Google Chrome yet so you need to manually allow the exception. Some users
have noticed that to get the proper behavior from their virus software they had to uninstall the
browser, remove the rule in the virus software, and then reinstall and allow network access the first
time they launch the browser.

2. Do you have a hardware firewall that needs to be configured? Some users have routers or proxy
servers that need to be configured to allow Chrome to access the network.

3. Is your machine infected with malware? There are some malware infestations that try to redirect
your browser to a site they control. These infestations don't recognize Chrome so they do the wrong
thing. In other words, the malware is trying to hijack Chrome but fails and the result is Chrome
thinking it can't get to the network.

This error, "Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error." is reported when Chrome did everything it was
required to do to get access to the network and it failed. This is very early in the process of
talking to a web server so it probably has nothing to do with the web server.

The issues around submitting large forms is being tracked in a different bug.

I am going to leave this open so people can find it. However, in versions of Chrome before we have the
new http stack (we currently rely on a stack provided by the OS) there is little we can do to improve
the feedback about the problem when it happens.

Comment 40 by Deleted ...@, Nov 22 2008

Thanks John, you're right it have nothing to do with Chrome itself.. In my case it
was a malware (I had Nod32 antivirus and he didn't detect anything :S) but with
another soft I found the "Antivirus 2008 Malware"... I didn't manage to remove it, so
I just did a quick format and reinstalled everything.. It's been a while now, and no
problem with Chrome so far...
These damn malwares are more sofisticated than ever..; they autoupdate theirselves so
the antivirus don't detect them :S

Comment 41 by Deleted ...@, Dec 10 2008

Today I started getting "Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error." with every site I
have tried in a Chrome Incognito window. A regular Chrome window goes to all the
same sites without any problems. Would 1., 2., or 3. only impact Incognito windows
not regular ones?

Comment 42 by jon@chromium.org, Dec 10 2008

Interesting that Incognito would be different. I will have to investigate.

Comment 43 by jon@chromium.org, Dec 10 2008

Incognito only does not make sense to us. Can you tell us more about your situation?
Were you able to resolve it? Can you reproduce the problem? Have you checked the
common issues?

Comment 44 by das...@gmail.com, Dec 15 2008

Hi, I'm spotting this problem, when I'm doing form(POST) submit with javascript
form.submit() when the site is under Basic authentication. In this case it seems that
chrome doesn't include Basic authentication attribute into request and then getting
"401 Unauthorized" error from the server just after request header is received. But
chrome continues sending form POST data and after that reports "Error 2
(net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error." When you do simple submit with Submit button -
everything seems ok.

Comment 45 by Deleted ...@, Jan 6 2009

I'm having the same error pop up with me too,(Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown
error.) but it's with every website i go to. i have no problems with IE or Firefox.
Can someone help..I've been told by tons of people that Chrome is the best web
broswer so far, and I'd at least like to try it out for myself.

Comment 46 by Deleted ...@, Jan 9 2009

Very much a chrome issue. I have been using chrome for a month now and when I got
back from the holidays, I cannot access the metalink Site of Oracle
(https://metalink.oracle.com/CSP/ui/index.html) when i can access the same site using
firefox, IE and MyIE.

I'm Using Chrome to write this post. I don't know what's causing this.

Comment 47 by Deleted ...@, Jan 9 2009

another strange thing.. when I use incognito windows to access the same URL, it
worked fine...

Comment 48 by eglas...@gmail.com, Jan 11 2009

In my case I can exactly say it was related to a cookie that was somehow damaged i.e.
all the sites affected where using live passport and it was only fixed when I cleared
the cookies (clearing cache doesn't affects it)

Comment 49 by jon@chromium.org, Jan 12 2009

It would be useful if everyone who is having this problem would try clearing their
Cookies. Here are the steps:

  1. Click on the wrench menu.
  2. Select Clear Browsing Data...
  3. Make sure Delete Cookies is Checked (other can be unchecked)
  4. Click the Clear Browsing Data button

You can immediately try the site again without having to restart the browser.

If the problem is corrupted cookie files then re-installing would not necessarily fix
the problem as we don't delete your cookies when we install. This would also explain
Incognito mode working because we don't return cookies to the server in that mode.

Comment 50 by Deleted ...@, Jan 13 2009

For me, it doesn't appear to be a cookies issue. I'm not running into a problem with
this on every page but it is specifically happening for me when I click on a link
that does a response.redirect.

Oddly enough, it is happening only on my development server at the moment and only
with Chrome.
(asp.net)

Comment 51 by jon@chromium.org, Jan 14 2009

Wolfeitz, did you try what I suggested in Comment 39?

For those of you where incognito mode works but regular mode does not try what I
suggest in Comment 49 if the steps in Comment 39 fails.

Comment 52 by Deleted ...@, Jan 31 2009

I had problems accessing work related domain meteli.net, which has been working
without problems with Chrome for ages (some admin side things don't work, but they
are firefox specific anyway).
The strange thing is, I opened up an incognito window (which I have now used twice
ever) and the site loaded immediately. Then I tried it again in the same tab that
gave me the problem before and now it worked normally. So problem solved (for me).

I access the site several/tens of times a day and this was the first time anything
like this happened, first time on any site/domain for that matter.

Comment 53 by Deleted ...@, Feb 4 2009

I got Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error, too. I got it while I was going on
sports.yahoo.com. All the other sites were okay but not sports.yahoo.com.

Comment 54 by Deleted ...@, Feb 5 2009

I've been getting a lot of these lately on random pages, forcing a refresh (CTRL + R)
usually loads the site. Very strange behaviour.
www.ar15.com generates this error a lot. Refreshing the page generally loads the
page.

Comment 56 by jon@chromium.org, Feb 9 2009

Please see comment #39.

Comment 57 by Deleted ...@, Feb 25 2009

I also get the Error 2 on most pages. It happens on one desktop running XP, but
another desktop and a laptop seem to be OK so far.

I have made sure all of the interconnection properties on the non-working machine
match those on the working ones, as well as the Google Chrome options. I even
temporarily turned off my CA firewall but that didn't change anything.

Comment 58 by Deleted ...@, Mar 2 2009

I've been using Chrome for a few months perfectly. But starting early last week I
started having the error described, that when I first load Chrome (www.google.com as
start page) it usually tells me the webpage is unavailable with "Error 2
(net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error." in the detail. Refreshing 3 or 4 times usually
brings the page up finally. I've noticed that once I get a valid page, then I have
no problems after that until I close Chrome and start over again. Any subsequent
Chrome windows or tabs I open load fine as long as I've refreshed my way to a real
page in the first one.

I've tried tweaking and toggling antivirus, firewall settings, various suggested
flags, etc... still having the problem.

Comment 59 by Deleted ...@, Apr 3 2009

Hi All,
I Had the same problem with Google chrome.
I used to get the error
Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error.
I Use CA Anti virus. I recently found that when u go to parental control option in CA
and login to administrator. Now Google Chrome does not have the problem anymore.
This should some what fix the problem.

Comment 60 by Deleted ...@, Apr 7 2009

Thanks for that last comment. I have never had the time to mess with Chrome because
of this nasty error. I logged in under parental controls in ca changed user,
logged back in as admin. no change. disabled website inspector. opened chrome.
it worked. enabled CA website inspector and it still worked. So try enabling and
disabling Website inspector in CA.

Works for me so far. I think I will bo back to Kaspersky next year. Not just for
this reason but this is another reason.

On the positivie side, at least this error is named appropriately!

ERRRRR!!!! Failed! Unknown!

Comment 61 by Deleted ...@, Apr 17 2009

I got round it by going into Facebook using Internet Explorer. When I tried again
using Chrome it was all fine and is still working okay. It's also a lot faster; it
had been slower and slower the previous few days

Comment 68 by Deleted ...@, Apr 24 2009

This error (Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error.) has started coming up for me
but only on Incognito windows, which is odd considering everyone else seems to have
things work with Incognito.
I'm running a malware scan now.

Comment 69 by Deleted ...@, May 11 2009

Same with me too. This error (Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error.) has started
coming up for me but only on Incognito chrome for all websites, whereas when not in
incognito mode chrome works fine for all website. No malware detected so far.
I'm running a full malware scan again.

Comment 70 by wtc@chromium.org, May 11 2009

Hi everyone,

I'll be working on this issue. First, Google Chrome 2.0
will be released soon, and it uses a new HTTP stack. If
you are still experiencing this bug, I'd like you to install
Google Chrome 2.0 Beta (http://www.google.com/intl/en/landing/chrome/beta/).

If you are still seeing this bug with Chrome 2.0 Beta, I'd
like you to run chrome.exe with the --enable-logging
command-line option. When you have reproduced the bug,
shut down Chrome, and use another browser to attach the
chrome_debug.log file to this bug. You will find the
chrome_debug.log file right next to the chrome.exe file.
Please also type "about:version" in the location bar and
paste the output in this bug.

Thanks!

Comment 73 by Deleted ...@, Jul 5 2009

I know lots are being plagued by this predicament of "Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED):
Unknown error." And here is the solution I achieved in Vista Firewall. When adding a
rule, Vista typically uses variables in its file path, such that the following being
Chrome's rule path:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

But when I convert the file path to be more "direct" like:

C:\Users\MYUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

It works!

P.S. I am sure other OS users facing the same problem will find the above solution
competent.

Comment 74 by Deleted ...@, Aug 31 2009

Sorry, but the firewall solution does not work.

Comment 78 by Deleted ...@, Sep 23 2009

It is Chrome related because its the ONLY browser that does it. I get it all the time
now. No other browser displays gets this error.
Using Ubuntu and Google Chrome 4.0.211.2
I'm currently consistently getting this error on trying to load:
http://www.alltomtv.se/customavatars/avatar52431_2.gif

While loading that GIF works well in Firefox.

I get this error randomly on trying to load regular web sites too, but it's farily
consistent now and there at least.

Google Chrome 4.0.211.2, Mac OS X 10.6.
BTW (sorry for "spam"), I notice that Firefox has a momentary delay before it loads.

Is Google Chrome perhaps timing out prematurely and giving up? Just a thought.

I run no extension on this version of Chrome.

Comment 81 by pchid...@gmail.com, Sep 23 2009

#80 I was of the same opinion that chrome is probably timing out prematurely, but dint
want to guess wrong.

Comment 82 by Deleted ...@, Sep 29 2009

i had this error while building a website. it is a caching issue but not browser
related. you can clean your browser cache to the cows come home it wont fix it. try
accessing these pages from a different internet connection!!!

Comment 83 by pchid...@gmail.com, Sep 30 2009

On the same internet connection, firefox, IE work fine. Its only observed in chrome.
If its a cache issue, chrome is probably not doing well here. Clearing the browser
history doesnt help either. It seems to provide a immediate relief but gets back to
reporting error soon enough.
Can somebody take a look at this please?
Latest beta 3.0.195.25. Windows XP.

Just got this out of nowhere when running my gmail via chrome app. Happens when
running incognito too. I don't think anything else has been done to the computer.

With --enable-logging the only chrome_debug.log content after visiting a site is:

[5944:5368:6664734:WARNING:tcp_client_socket_win.cc(74)] Unknown error 10013 mapped
to net::ERR_FAILED

For anyone who has a Symantec Norton product installed, further research has found
this to be a common factor amongst people with this error.

I looked further and my own Norton 2009 service wasn't running. Symantec has a
support page about this problem simply called "unable to open this norton product"
which has recently been updated.
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?
wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080801182027EN&environment=

I believe Symantec has broken their own software before with automatic updates and
not told users. So the vagueness of the support item and the spontaneous problems
around Norton 2009 lead me to believe that an update has broken Norton 2009, and a
symptom of that problem is this Chrome error.

That said, I went into Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Services and
started the Norton service manuall, which started the software, and has allowed
Chrome to work again. So that could be a workaround for you.

Why does only Chrome break when Norton 2009 breaks? That is a question for someone
else to answer...

Comment 87 by gke...@gmail.com, Oct 6 2009

I see this in linux with chromium only. I see it a lot with chase online web site.

disable my firewall (Onecare) then Chrome works fine. So it appears to be a
Chrome/Firewall issue!

Exactly as post 89 states. Of note, my issue only began after I started
experimenting to try and 'turn off' NIS2009 w/o umpteen times turning off each and
every aspect of NIS's features.

So annoyed by repeatedly being forced to turn off every NIS feature one at a time,
I'd tried simply un-ticking NIS2009 from msconfig's services list and re-booting, but
I found that NIS's firewall still seems to run (that or some snafu occurs within the
Windows Security Center because it still lists NIS's firewall as running). Obviously
I'm not finding a simple means of turning off NIS2009.

Also before discovering that's why Chrome's browser wasn't accessing websites, I
tried all suggested recommendations mentioned above, disk cleanup, clearing browser
history, cookies, etc., but even though NIS's icon wasn't seen in my systems tray, it
still seems to have been running it's firewall, that or it at the very least the fact
that Windows Security Center indicated NIS's firewall was running, one of those
things surely had caused Chrome's bowser from accessing any websites.

Whether or not NIS's firewall might be running (when I use msconfig in that way),
since the Windows Security Center lists NIS's firewall as running, what is up with
that 'causing' Chrome's browser from accessing any website?

So why if there's ever any firewall issue, how come 'built in' diagnostics of a
server and/or browser aren't smart enough to diagnose more than "Error 2
(net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error."?

Happ-e-trails to all
I'd just like to add that when I reported my issue above, I ran the Windows 7
built-in firewall and no antivirus tool at the time.
Put me down as an unsatisfied chrome user.

My issue is described before;

CHROME IS THE ONLY BROWSER THAT RANDOMLY GIVES A LOADING ERROR

Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error.

Refreshing the page will load it without making any other changes. And like I said
before, it is pretty much random. Sometimes, I can't even load google.com. But
refreshing will fix it. It is very annoying and I am probably going back to firefox.

Comment 96 by Deleted ...@, Nov 13 2009

Me too. Back to firefox. This error is really annoying.... yep, it happens randomly....

Comment 97 by Deleted ...@, Nov 16 2009

Annoying it was...but it wasnt a chrome issue actually. The firewall application (
McAfee) had it blocked. I logged in as an administrator to ALLOW access to Chrome.

Try safe mode with networking ( in windows) , if it works there its a firewall \
security suite issue.

I read somewhere in this thread that such issues were caused by Malaware too , so a
spyware scan wouldnt hurt either

If this is a firewall issue- why does the firewall allow chrome to transmit after
you refresh your browser? It doesn't make sense to me.

Comment 100 by gke...@gmail.com, Nov 16 2009

Also I have no firewall on my linux system and it still happens.

Comment 101 by Deleted ...@, Nov 28 2009

1. I'm running chrome on a brand new samsung n130. I'd be suprised if samsung
deployed malware as part of their windows image, so it's not a malware issue.

2. Chrome is allowed thru windows firewall. not a firewall issue and here I can
speak with authority because I'm a network engineer.

3. Chrome is an exception on AVG av, so not an av issue.

4. doesn't affect other browsers.

5. Come on Google! I thought your software was going to 'just work'. Not so easy
when push comes to shove is it?
I agree with the last guy. I found Google and Picasa exceptional programs that just
seem to work. Very disappointed with this product and support. In my case was the
Parental Controls in CA. So does that make it a CA problem?

Comment 103 by wtc@chromium.org, Dec 3 2009

You can help me investigate this bug by finding out what error
is mapped to net::ERR_FAILED.

1. Please follow the instructions at
http://www.chromium.org/for-testers/enable-logging
to run Google Chrome with logging enabled.

2. Try to reproduce the net::ERR_FAILED error. When you get the
net::ERR_FAILED error page, look for a line like

Unknown error xxx mapped to net::ERR_FAILED

in the logging output.

Please let me know what it is, and what OS and Chrome version you're
using. Thanks!

I get the error:
Danish version:
Fejl 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Ukendt fejl.
English version:
Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error.

This is when i want to download an anticheat .exe file from www.easyanticheat.net
I can visit the page, but can't download the file. Since this anticheat program is
used in tournaments, its kind of a pressing problem.

After trying this problem in Chrome browser, i tryed other browser to se i the
problem is also there. IE og Firefox got similar problems, but not the same text.
Only this that are similar, is that i can't download the file, and it says that the
domain is temp. out/down, or the adress is perm. moved.
I know that the file is not moved.
My internet provider can download this file.
Homepage where the problem startet was: www.easyanticheat.net . I can visit the page,
but i can't download the file i need.

OS: windows 7 64-bit ultimate
Chrome: 3.0.195.33
Tryed:
- deleting cache
- deleting cookies and so on.
- tryed turning of my firewall/antivirus
- tryed other DNS and flushing DNS.
- New computer, so there is no virus/trojans

Hope you can help me with this problem.
Can't confirm comment 104. :( I tried downloading it on Mac OS X 10.6 and Google
Chrome 4.0.249.30.

When I reported my own issue earlier, I thought it wasn't on the client end since
other web browsers did things properly, and I was pretty sure our company firewall
wasn't misconfigured to deny access to port 80 somewhow, or that I had antiviruses
(which was later confirmed after having installed an antivirus tool).

But since this error keep resurfacing under unreproductible circumstances for other
users, I'm now inclined to believe it is something on the client end after all. Perhaps
sometimes not due to the user's own computer on the network, but temporary
fluctuations on the local network that Google Chrome is more sensitive to than other
browsers.

Because while this error is hard to reproduce for user A if it pops up for user B, the
only consistent part that I can tell is that other browsers usually works when Chrome
has a problem. That is the main problem I have with this issue.

I'm going to mark this bug WontFix (for "obsolete"). This bug
report has too many reports of different bugs that it's impossible
to keep track of them. Some of those bugs have been fixed. If
you are still getting the net::ERR_FAILED error, please file a
new bug report with the Chrome version and OS info. I apologize
for the inconvenience.

Nikita.Grachev, ajaksu: I'm sorry I missed your comments 111-115.
I confirm that the bug with https://sg.megafonsib.ru/ on Linux
has been fixed ( issue 33126 ). In this case, I think it's the
file:// URL in the AIA extension of the server certificate that
causes problem with NSS.

Comment 121 by Deleted ...@, Aug 4 2010

I get this error when browsing www.me.com. But I can access it if I switch to incognito window.

I'm using Mac OS 10.6.4 with Chrome version 6.0.472.14
I used to have this problem when attempting to load certain Google domains, such as code.google.com and translate.google.com.

A leftover rule in Little Snitch (a reverse firewall for outgoing traffic from applications) was blocking clients1.google.com in Chrome and Chromium. The rule was originally entered to block Google Suggest.

Apparently, Google Translate and Google Code can't load a page at all and this error occurs if clients1.google.com is blocked.

The first suggestion by Google to check "Anti-Virus" software (for outgoing firewall rules which stop outgoing connections) should have been helpful... if I weren't troubleshooting a Mac installation, and didn't habitually stop reading a section when I see the word "anti-virus".
