matt.m.domain.com gets rewritten to matt.domain.com?

Reported by kallist...@gmail.com, Sep 27

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/69.0.3497.100 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Type in matt.m.domain.com
2. matt.m.domain.com gets "changed?" to matt.domain.com

What is the expected behavior?
Not to remove random parts of URL's

What went wrong?
We looked into this issue, and Chrome seems to be arbitrarily hiding pieces of domain names. You can click back on the URL bar, and press an arrow key and it reappears.

This is impacting our users and creating an uptick with calls to our IT support department.

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 69.0.3497.81 Channel: stable
OS Version: Fedora 28

jdonnelly: My understanding from Issue 881694 was that this was disabled. Are there further diagnostics to recommend?

This should no longer be happening on Chrome 69. If it is, please post the about:version information here, including the whole "Variations:" section.

thanks!

I can confirm the "hiding" URL parts no longer occurs in Chome 69.

This is insane, how could this be a change to make it through testing?

It seems like a more reasonable way to handle it would be to simply highlight parts of the url that are "more important".

Randomly hiding parts of the URL make troubleshooting issues pretty annoying... and I think could make Chrome more vulnerable to spoof attacks manipulating the URL hiding in nefarious ways.

Thanks for all the hard work on Chrome.
