Email mesaages turn black on changing to canary 71.0.3557.2 webview

Chrome Version: chrome canary 71.0.3557.2 
OS: Android 8.0.0; Pixel 2 Build/OPM1.171019.013 , Nexus 6x

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) set canary as default webview in Android developer options
(2) open an email in Gmail app and observe dark images

What is the expected result?

Email displays properly

What happens instead?

No text is seen and content place turns black

Good Build: 71.0.3556.0
Bad Build: 71.0.3557.2
