Regressions in tablet mode disambiguation

Project Member Reported by omrilio@chromium.org, Sep 14

Issue description

Master bug to figure out behavior with mouse, keyboard, display issues when connecting to devices.

Master doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TIiQ_30SRc0PZrYVWUgRieTrW1m-7tWsKb6XPKq6UPk/edit

A couple of notes from investigation:
1. There is a bug where some Bluetooth mice do not disconnect properly when turned off or turning Bluetooth on, keeping the device in laptop mode. xdai@ has a fix in review for this
2. There is a bug where sometimes the virtual keyboard gets disabled when mouse is connected. That shouldn't happen. this is being investigated, will also file a separate bug to track.
3. More complicated - it looks like some dongles (at least Logitech ones) for external mouse and keyboard do not report correctly when they are connected or not, hence users staying in laptop mode even though they undocked and rotated to tablet mode. While in normal case this indicates the user wants full laptop environment, there is also a use case of taking a convertible and rotating it to tablet mode.
We will investigate #3 more.

I would also love to hear from folks if there are other issues or use-cases where people would like one of the following:
1. Not mirroring displays by default when connecting to a display in tablet mode
2. Not extending displays by default when connecting to a display with a mouse attached
3. Not having a virtual keyboard when no physical keyboard is connected (in any mode)
4. Not having freeform windows when a mouse is connected (in any mode).
5. Not having screen rotate to nearest landscape when keyboard is disconnected but mouse is connected.

Thank you all!

Are we still seeing #2 after issue 878795 ?
Components: UI>Shell>TabletMode
I have the same issue connecting an AirPed (a device to turn pages in mobile sheets pro) This device connects via bluetooth...
For number 5, there are a couple use cases which come to mind around document / music reading where someone might prefer a portrait rotation while the keyboard is detached or folded behind. Long documents often work quite well with portrait rotations in general, editing source files, or just taking the laptop with you while you read something but not shutting the mouse off. All of these seem like times when accelerator rotation might be desired.

Alternately, as a design consideration, you might consider a rotation lock button like that in Android 9, that appears when the screen rotation and accelerator disagree allowing one to resolve that at one touch without having the screen rotate accidentally either.
Hi.
I allso have problems with screen oritation when I use my old Logitech V470 bluetooth mouse at my Acer Chromebook Tab 10.
When the Mouse are connected the screen and locked so the Acer is down when read ing the text correct.
As you can see on the fotos and screen dump are there som things missing:
Screen light level
Rotation
And the posibility to make screen dumps with Power Button and Vol Down.

The latest update has fixed the issue - thanks!!!
Can you clarify which update you're on that fixed the issue? (Also, which issue specifically?) I'm on Version 69.0.3497.120 (Official Build) (64-bit) and see no significant changes. Thanks!
The bug was with my ASUS C302. It stopped rotating 90 degrees and opening
up the virtual keyboard in tablet mode.

Version 70.0.3538.69 (Official Build) beta (64-bit)
Check for updates
Thanks! Oddly enough when I check for updates I'm told it's up to date. Perhaps it hasn't finished rolling out? Anyone else been able to update?

Maybe because I'm on Beta and you're on official Stable? Just guessing here :-)
Ah, yeah, that might do it. Anyone on the stable channel gotten an update
with improvements? Thanks again.
Hello, I'm sorry if my input is rather lacking in comparison to the others; i was just passed to this forum after posting my similar issue on the main Google Pixelbook forum.

The person responding to my post mentioned that the original design of this issue forced laptop mode if you plugged something in externally (i'm assuming this is the same for bluetooth mice, which is the problem i'm having).

This person then mentioned that developers are asking for use cases where we wanted (or didn't want) auto rotation with a mouse attached.

What I've found is that you can't have both--you can only have one of these: Turn the laptop on and decide whether you want to use your mouse or whether you want to use tablet mode. If you perform either, you are locked in. In other words, if you use the mouse, then you're doomed to never achieve tablet mode that includes the auto rotation setting (it is permanently landscape, per this forum). If you move to tablet mode, then the bluetooth setting is unavailable and you can't use a mouse.

In this case, i must say that ultimately, no settings (bluetooth or rotate) should be withdrawn from the settings.

In case you need to know:

Bah I'm sorry, i meant to clarify my "doomed" comment. I neglected to mention that you can clear the issue by rebooting the pixelbook. It's just annoying to reboot every time i'm using the mouse and then want to switch to tablet mode, or vice versa.
The Slate is s special case. If the Slate is connected via pogo pins, it should definitely go into landscape mode.

With Bluetooth/USB connections, I tend to like the original design of external device = landscape, but there is much merit in marty.ge...@gmail.com's suggestion of adopting the new Android 9 behavior of offering a rotation icon when orientation is changed (or, in this case, external devices connected). It gives everyone the opportunity to set the screen orientation as they wish, AND it unifies Google's design across platforms. It's also very timely since Chrome OS will be moving to Android 9 Play Store in the very near future. Win-win-win.
What's the big deal fixing it so tablet mode still switches when a mouse is connected. How could it have passed your QA? why does it take two months to fix and going?

Assigning to omrillo@ whom is leading investigation of further HID issue.

Cross posting omrillo's update from issue 882410:

"Thank you for all your comments everyone.

We have addressed many of the bugs mentioned here, and see that amount of feedback reports went down significantly after the latest update. That being said, as mentioned, there are still bugs with some HID devices, mainly certain types of mice and foot pedals that are still misbehaving.

We'd like to learn more about those peripherals so we can address this and have a great experience for everyone. Since we can't reproduce many of these issues we need your help identifying the bad states.

Please help us by filling out this short form (https://goo.gl/forms/Vq2vaVAXZvxnK5kq2) to help us investigate.

Since we will get feedback via the form in real-time and for folks not to lose this comment, I am closing this for additional comments. Please continue giving structural feedback via the form.

Sorry again for the non-ideal experience some of you might have, and thanks for your help in the investigation so we can solve it!"
