aria-live regions not announced with VoiceOver

Reported by gregoryd...@gmail.com, Sep 10

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_13_3) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/69.0.3497.81 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
Go to https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Accessibility/ARIA/ARIA_Live_Regions and use any of the live region samples there
(I cannot get any live-region example anywhere to work - you can try here too https://minorninth.github.io/aria-live-region-tests/live_region_tests.html)

What is the expected behavior?
Changes to aria-live regions should be announced

What went wrong?
VoiceOver does not say anything when aria-live regions are updated.

Did this work before? Yes 68

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 69.0.3497.81 Channel: stable
OS Version: OS X 10.13.3
Flash Version:

Live regions work in Safari.

I'm seeing this as well. I'm seeing problems both when aria-live dom elements are injected into the page dynamically as well as when the aria-live items that already exist have content inside that are updated.

Thanks for filing the issue!

Tried testing the issue on reported chrome version 69.0.3497.81 using Mac 10.13.1 with the below mentioned steps.
1. Launched Chrome
2. Enabled VoiceOver
3. Navigated to https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Accessibility/ARIA/ARIA_Live_Regions
Observed the VoiceOver announcing the content which ever is navigated to. Attaching the screen cast of the same for reference.

@Reporter: Could you please have a look at the screen cast and let us know if we have missed anything in the process. As we are not very sure about what does "announcing live regions" mean! could you please elaborate on the same. Your inputs helps us to triage the issue further in a better way.

As you change the select control values and press "Go", there is text just below that control that gets updated. Those areas are marked as aria-live regions, and the text should be automatically announced by VoiceOver. Based on the VO speech window, it does not appear that those text changes are getting announced. If you perform those same tests with Safari, you will see and hear the additional text getting announced as it updates.

Unable to reproduce the issue on latest chrome stable# 69.0.3497.92 using Mac 10.13.6 as per comment# 6.

@Reporter: Could you please try to test this issue on latest chrome stable(#69.0.3497.92) and let us know if the issue still persists. You can download latest chrome stable from URL: https://www.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel.

Thanks!
I'm not the reporter, came across this issue 3 hours after it was posted and experienced same issue (repeatable on the provided MDN ARIA Live Regions page). I've updated to Version 69.0.3497.92 (Official Build) (64-bit) on macOS 10.13.4 and still experience the issue where the live region is not read by VoiceOver when it updates (the section was read before I updated to Chrome 69 on Sept. 10th, previously on 67).
I can confirm that this remains an issue on the latest Chrome on Mac.
I can confirm that this issue persists. It also exists here: https://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-practices-1.1/examples/alert/alert.html

Steps to reproduce:
1. Turn on VoiceOver
2. Interact with the "Trigger Alert" button

The alert behaves as expected in Safari but not in Chrome stable (69.0.3497.100)
