new regression with omnibox

Reported by bau...@gmail.com, Sep 8

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/69.0.3497.81 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. type youtube in omnibox

What is the expected behavior?
display all bookmark with youtube and display icone to see it's bookmark result

What went wrong?
-chrome autocomplet omnibox with .com/?hl=fr ! (as on IE6 at the beginning of Chrome, a harmful autocompletition that made us prefer chromium omnibox.)

-result with new design is very limited, very big space interline (for tablet?) much less result displayed on the same space.

-now search resultt not display if this is a bookmark result or web.. just display icon website (bookmark icon only displayed if no icon stored in bookmark)

possible to have a display for PC?
and display first all bookmark

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 69.0.3497.81 Channel: stable
OS Version: 6.1 (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2)
Flash Version:

the omnibox is facilitated navigation; it is true that with the big regression on the search engines autocomplished by Chrome it loses its interest.
With now less results posted, if it is necessary every time to display the management of the favorites to make a search in his favorites .. There is no advantage of using a common bar which slows access to his favorites.

sorry for the bad translation, or if the feeling is not respected, I use Google Translate

Thanks for the report.

It looks like you have three main points. I'll reply to them in term.

1. A bad omnibox autocompletion. We haven't changed the code for this in many months. One way to get rid of the problematic suggestion is to delete it from your history. If you are willing to help us debug, please submit the chrome://omnibox output for "youtube". Check both the “show all details” and “show results per provider” boxes. This will help us figure out what's going on. Paste the results in here unformatted; we’ll be able to decipher them.

2. The new design with more spacing between items. This is intentional. The omnibox is still displaying the same number of suggestions; you're not losing any. They just take more more space. This design facilitates suggestions such as "weather san francisco" (try typing that) which displays more extra information, using up some of that space. We're going to be launching more of these types of suggestions in the future.

3. No indication of whether a suggestion is a bookmark result. This was debated within the team when deciding to display the web site icons--what should we do if the page is bookmarked? I don't think we had a principled answer to this, and we're willing to reconsider if seems better to replace the web site icon and instead display a bookmark, or instead combine them somehow.

I'm going to merge this bug into one about item #3. If you want to reply to my comments about #1 and #2 here, I'll see them.
thank you for your consideration.

1.you're right, I emptied the history not long ago. I see that the omnibox displays more historical result than favorites. What interests me is to look in my favorites. And especially the favorites used a lot (maybe add an option in chrome: // settings / clearBrowserData to not remove the number of use of a favorite? (I think it exists in IE with an option not to delete data from favorite sites) ?

better than youtube search, I often use google translate and it is true that despite having it favorites after removal of favorites it becomes more complicated to access via the ombibox. Before historical deletion the omnibox automatically completes the url (just type tra ENTER).

-After deleting the history, type TRA in the omnibox, but go to the last position (limited to 3 results in the favorites). If one completes to have TRAN (for translate.google ..) the omnibox no longer displays any result for translate.google.

-Worse: even having named the favorite Google.translate in 'Google Traduction translate' (instead of 'Google Traduction', which is also the title of the page stored also in the favorites of which one has lost the control! Impossible to edit the title of page in favorites:it might also be good to give us control over it, or not to save it to favorites) no result in omnibox for TRAN

-After renaming my favorite to 'Translate Google translation', it appears in 3rd position in the omnibox; whereas it should be in first position because:
-'tran' is the beginning of the favorite.
-'tran' is also the beginning of the url (but here it seems to have a problem maybe related to the recent modification of not anymore to display the domain prefixes in the omnibox - the omnibox display is google.com instead of translate.google.com, so +1 for Google to redisplay the complete domains)

2. Not work, omnibox display only 'weather san francisco - recherche Google' perhaps because I disable predictive...
I do not want Google to search for items and url suggestion while I'm not asking for anything yet. Everyone does not have fiber at home or 5G yet. I want to keep control.
And its super space makes it necessary to move the mouse a lot more, which does not improve the user experience. I'd rather have 30 lines than 10.
Would it be possible at least to have omnibox configuration options. Users still love to be able to customize their environment (on PC, maybe it's different on tablet)

another remark: I added search engine for bookmark (previous not work since new bookmark design and not easy since chrome remove right clic in search field to add it in search engine)

Name:Favoris Chrome|key:fav|url:chrome://bookmarks/?q=%s

This work to found in bookmark, but must open new tab result, suggestion not displayed. How to display the results directly in the omnibox?
