Thumbnails dissapeared

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_10_5) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/68.0.3440.106 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:

What is the expected behavior?
That when I open a tab I see my 8 thumbnails I placed

What went wrong?
No thumbnails anymore

Did this work before? Yes The one before this..Version 68.0.3440.106 (Official Build) (64-bit)

OS Version: OS X 10.10.5

I am seeing this issue on Windows 10, Chrome Version 69.0.3497.81 (Official Build) (64-bit)

No thumbnails (nor any Shortcuts etc) - just the UI as shown in original report, with nothing rendered below the mid-screen search box.

Happens to 2 of 2 of our computers (Win 10) at home. This is extremely annoying!

There is whole new Reddit discussions about this, eg https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/9dofeg/missing_the_homepage_most_visited_thumbnails/

Seems that Google just doesn't care as this issue stays "Unconfirmed" here.
