Issue descriptionChrome Version: 70.0.3534.4 OS: All? I frequently find myself wanting to tab back and forth between two open tabs - e.g. I'm reading something off one tab and want to transcribe it in another tab. When the tabs are side-by-side this is easy enough with Ctrl+Tab/Ctrl+Shift+Tab. However, when the tabs are far apart, I find myself having to either switch back to the mouse or rearranging my tabs (also with mouse). Ctrl+1..9 is somewhat helpful but broken by a large number of tabs, especially if there's a large number of pinned tabs and I want to flip between a pinned tab and a non-pinned tab. I propose Ctrl+~ (modeled on Vim's ~~ to jump back and forth) be a shortcut to jump to the tab that was last opened. This seems like it would help productivity in some common tasks.

My main comment is: how would users who'd ostensibly benefit from this discover it exists?

I agree it's not discoverable - but the same can be said of all Chrome's shortcuts and the tab switching ones seem particularly similar, e.g. Ctrl+[1-9] for tab switching.

Right... and really the only reason we added those is that other browsers supported them so we didn't want to disappoint users who expected them to work. So let me look at this a different way. I'm a user who is switching between two tabs. How did I get there? What am I doing? Do I find it inconvenient? What's frustrating? What do I try, to make it better? Maybe somewhere in that pipeline we discover a better, more core fix for the issue. |
