Omnibox cursor jumps when switching from auto-complete favicon to search provider favicon |
||||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: 68.0.3440.118 OS: ChromeOS What steps will reproduce the problem? From the new tab page, type a character to get an auto-complete suggestion with a favicon. Then, press the 'backspace' key to clear the auto-suggestion, which causes the displayed favicon to switch to the default search provider. What is the expected result? The text in the omnibox should not move when the favicon changes. What happens instead? The text in the omnibox shifts when the favicon changes, which is visually jarring (see video).

Hello szager@: Can you reproduce this issue in latest Canary. I think, this issue is already fixed there. Thanks in advance.

In version 70.0.3534.4, the text doesn't shift, but the cursor jumps to the left when you delete a single character and the favicon changes. Not as bad, but still kinda jarring. Can't get video right now, I will get it later.

[omnibox triage] tommycli@, I'm not sure about the current plans related to text and cursor movement. Can you please own this bug?

Looks like this issue can be merged into issue 853355, correct?

Re comment #5: that issue is about text jumping, which seems fixed now. However, the cursor still jumps around. Updating bug description and adding new video.

That's the "Omnibox UI Jog Textfield on Popup" behavior. In chrome://flags you can disable it with the following flag: chrome://flags/#omnibox-ui-jog-textfield-on-popup When you disable it, a separator will appear between icon and text, so that no jog happens.

OK then, dropping this issue. I'm curious what the plan is though; will you eventually drop the flag and use the enabled behavior? Just one vote here, but I definitely prefer no jogging.

The jog is enabled by default, but the final decision is pending. Please see comment #64 in issue 853355. |
