Issue descriptionUserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/68.0.3440.106 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Open a page (eg. www.google.com) 2. Click in address bar and press enter What is the expected behavior? The page should reload. What went wrong? The page doesn't reload (in other words, nothing happens at all). After a second or so you can press enter again and it will work. Did this work before? N/A Chrome version: 68.0.3440.106 Channel: stable OS Version: 10.0 Flash Version: This is extremely annoying. I often want to reload a page without refreshing (which will resubmit forms and try to restore some page data), and the way to do that is by clicking in the address bar and pressing enter. However I often have to press enter 3 to 5 times before it will finally start loading the page. It seems to be related to how the suggestions box pops up after a second or so (which is quite annoying in itself - I don't want suggestions until I start typing, Chrome!). It also seems to take longer with longer URLs, which I would guess is because the suggestions box content is more complex and takes longer to gather. I'm a web dev so if you need more info just ask. I'll do anything to get this bug fixed. It's such a pain in the backside.

Unable to reproduce the issue on reported chrome version #68.0.344.106 using Windows 10, by following below steps. Steps: ===== 1.Launched chrome. 2.Opened a new tab page and entered www.google.com. 3.After navigating to www.google.com, clicked inside the address bar and pressed enter from keyboard. 4.Observed that the page reloads. Attaching the screencast for reference. @Reporter: Could you please review the attached screencast and let us know if anything is being missed from our end.Requesting you to retry this issue with fresh profile without any extensions and apps, reset all the flags to default and let us know if issue still persists. Thanks.!

@swarnasree.mukkala@chromium.org You are not pressing enter soon enough. It needs to be fast, approximately <1 second since clicking in the address bar for most pages, and for simple pages like google.com even faster. You should be able to hit enter several times after clicking in the address bar before it will actually reload the page if you do it fast enough.

I realised I also see the problem on Ubuntu 14.04 (I haven't tested later Ubuntu versions) so I created a new VM and installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 14.04, and downloaded the latest stable Chrome (69.0.3497.81). I didn't log into Chrome and I didn't install extensions. It's as fresh as you can get. I don't seem to be able to replicate on all sites, but it does definitely happen on google.com. The interesting thing is, the problem doesn't occur in Incognito. I'm assuming it's because Incognito doesn't try to give suggestions when you click in the address bar. I also updated Chrome to latest stable on my home computer and the issue still persists. I've attached a screencast showing the issue on a fresh install of Chrome. I'm pressing enter immediately after clicking, and I have to press it at least twice before the page will reload. If I only press it once immediately after clicking, nothing happens. It's not very pronounced on this fresh install but it's 100% the same issue. (On my work and home computers, which are on different Chrome profiles and have different extensions installed, the issue can be extremely obvious, sometimes taking 4-5 enters to reload a page.) You'll see me open an Incognito window. In the Incognito window the page loads instantly when I press enter. It's so fast I can't even keep up. Then I go back to the regular window and once again I have to press enter several times. I'm not sure if this is internet speed related. At work I get a consistent 17Mbps down, inconsistent 0.88Mbps up. At home I get a very consistent 32Mbps down, 8Mbps up. I'm also running Chrome on an SSD at work and home so it's probably not drive speed related.

Thanks for the detailed investigations. I think the cause probably (as you say) has to do with the system that provides suggestions when you focus the address bar (a.k.a. the omnibox). However, I'm confused by the first paragraph in comment #5. In chrome 68 on Windows, you should only get suggestions when you focus the address bar if you're signed into Chrome. If not, you shouldn't. Yet, that paragraph says that you experience it without signing into Chrome, and also implies that Chrome is giving suggestions when you focus the omnibox. (I think the paragraph implies that because you write "I'm assuming it's because Incognito doesn't try to give suggestions when you click in the address bar", which I read as you get suggestions in non-incognito.) Can you clarify how/when you see suggestions when focussing the omnibox and how/when whether being signed in matters? thanks!

Comment #5 is sheriffbot so I'll assume you mean #8. Sorry, that paragraph was poorly written. You're correct, I don't get suggestions when not signed in. My theory is that whatever system controls the suggestions is still running but not showing suggestions. Or something along those lines, I don't really know; I've never looked at Chromium's source. To clarify: - When signed in, I DO get suggestions and I DO see the issue - When signed out, I DON'T get suggestions and I DO see the issue - When incognito, I DON'T get suggestions and I DON'T see the issue - I define "get suggestions" as seeing a suggestions box appear below the omnibox when clicking once in the omnibox - On some pages I don't see the issue. For instance, when not signed in, I can go to google.com and see the issue, but if I search something (eg. "magento") I stop seeing the issue on that page.

Thanks for the clarification. This is indeed weird. I'll leave it from another omnibox triage engineer to pick up to investigate further.

Confirmed (at least once, but it's tricky, pages load too quick on the machine I'm at). I can try to take a look.

Good [time of day for your timezone] :) Did you get anywhere with this? I know it's super difficult to debug issues when they aren't easily reproducible so I'm willing to help any way I can to get this fixed.

@skare@chromium.org I just noticed you said "pages load too quick on the machine I'm at". The problem is specifically pages _not_ loading when pressing enter, so I'm a little confused as to how page load speed affects anything.

Hi, just checking in. Did you find time to investigate this issue? I still encounter it daily, often several times per day, and I'm up to date on Chrome 70.0.3538.77.

Is this a duplicate of bug 880354 ?
,

@mpear Yes, it appears so. Perhaps if you merge that other ticket into this one they'll have a better time understanding the issue. I say merge that one into this one because this one has more detailed information and is better explained (even if I do say so myself). I've love to get this bug fixed so I'll do any sort of testing you like.
