With a Cocoa context menu, VoiceOver reads a checked menu item as "checkmark, <menu item label>".
With a MacViews menu, it reads the label but ignores the checkmark.

This can be reproduced with the context menu of the Cast toolbar icon. (Hotdog menu -> Cast..., right click on Cast toolbar icon -> "Always show icon". Now that item is checked)
