Clank crashing on AMP pages after switching to other apps and back |
||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: 68.0.3440.70 (Official build) beta 32-bit OS: Android 7.1.2 Device: LG V30 What steps will reproduce the problem? (1) Open google.com (2) Type a newsworthy search query like "trump" (3) Click on an AMP page from the results (4) Switch to some other apps, forcing Chrome to free up some memory (5) Go back to the Homescreen and click on Chrome again Chrome now shows a sad tab. I think it's the iframe inside of the AMP viewer that's crashed. I can reproduce this frequently, but not every time. It definitely only seems to happen with AMP pages / the Google AMP viewer. Suspicion: the iframe is being evicted due to memory pressure, but when Chrome is reopened, the iframe isn't being reloaded.

No, I'm not getting crash IDs for these crashes. Sorry, I should have explicitly said that. I do have other crashes in chrome://crashes so I know Chrome is set to generate and upload crash logs. I wonder if we ever upload crashes when it's an iframe? Do we have OOPIF on this version of Chrome on this version of Android? If so, one theory is that the the OOPIF is being evicted due to low memory, then when Chrome is brought back to the foreground the logic to reload the iframe process isn't working. I suspect there's logic to prevent the main tab's render process from being evicted, and to ensure that the page is reloaded if it is - but that the logic isn't working for an OOPIF.

@dmazzoni: Could you please let us know what AMP pages are? Please provide screencast on reproducing the issue. This would help in better triaging. Thanks!

AMP stands for "accelerated mobile pages". In the Google search results look for any result that has a lightning bolt inside a circle, like the one in the top-left corner of this site: https://www.ampproject.org/ The lightning bolt appears next to the name of the site - for example when I search for "trump" the first result is from CNN and there's a lightning bolt next to CNN.com. AMP pages load extremely fast - like 1 second compared to 20 seconds for a regular link on the same site. You should be able to tell the difference when you compare them. Based on that, can you try to reproduce the bug using my steps, above?
