Issue descriptionUserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:61.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/61.0 Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Create bookmarks named below (one bookmark each line) from any website. ----------------------------------------- a123456789b123456789c123456789d123456789e123456789f123456789g123456789h123456789i123456789j123456789k123456789l123456789m123456789n123456789o123456789p123456789q123456789r123456789s123456789t123456789u123456789v123456789w123456789x123456789y123456789z123456789 YES FINISH! YES FINISH! ----------------------------------------- Or import this : https://gist.github.com/LaruYan/f12d8e3d95d27848cfcbfde50c937fed 2. Wait for sync 3. Open Google Chrome on other device* *I've saw this problem on Android, Windows. About iOS or macOS, Linux, I don't know about it. 4. check your name of bookmarks you've created/imported on procedure 1. What is the expected behavior? Google Chrome should show entire name of each bookmarks so you can see the last words "YES FINISH!". Google Chrome should not limit each bookmark's name even after sync. What went wrong? Google Chrome doesn't show entire name of each bookmarks.* They're trimmed after 255 bytes so you cannot see the last words "YES FINISH!". Google Chrome limits each bookmark's name for sync. * Names are seen on Google Chrome on other devices(other than device that created bookmarks). N/A Chrome version: 68.0.3440.106 Channel: stable OS Version: 10.0 Flash Version: 30,0,0,154 I have posted about this on Google Chrome Help Forum. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/6-g9mz6iE7o;context-place=forum/chrome And Twitter: (Chrome limits bookmarks' name to 255 bytes) https://twitter.com/LaruYan/status/1018104824208900096 (Firefox doesn't exhibit this problem.) https://twitter.com/LaruYan/status/1018140903943360512

Possibly related old bugs: Bug 334537 (about duplication caused by the cutoff, which was fixed), and bug 445348 which seems to be an exact duplicate of this one, but supposedly went away by itself? Over to mamir to investigate.

Yes. Long name of bookmarks suddenly went away. Maybe doing sync still cuts long names as said comment of 334547*? It also can be figured out whether this is due to sync or not, by creating a new profile(do not login or sync on it) put long bookmarks then see how it goes. I have created a fresh profile then put those long bookmarks mentioned on OP to how it goes. * "Sync internally performs some truncation on bookmark titles if they are too long." 3 days ago I created new profile and put the lengthy bookmarks in it, now, after 3 days It still shows lengthy name of bookmark. I think this problem is due to sync function.

Able to reproduce the issue on reported chrome version 68.0.3440.106 also on latest chrome 71.0.3544.0 using Mac 10.13.6, Ubuntu 17.10 and Windows 10. Same behavior is seen on M60(60.0.3112.113) hence considering it as non-regression and marking it as Untriaged. Note: On hovering on bookmark > able seen only some part of the bookmark name and when navigating to Bookmark Manager >> bookmark >> able to see the full name by hovering on it. Thanks!

phanindra.mandapaka@: any chance you could try to repro the very same issue with the experimental flag #enable-sync-uss-bookmarks enabled in chrome://flags? If it doesn't repro there, I would suggest we mark crbug.com/889819 as blocker.

Thanks for taking issue I posted. Now it's not reproducible, means 255 bytes limit has gone with the flag on. On other devices(both Android and PC, no iOS or Mac I don't have these) with flag is off, uncut names are shown for newly synced bookmarks but, visiting that bookmark on those devices still truncates its name to 255 bytes then bookmark will split due to differences of its name. That's why all of sync-enabled devices need that flag on. Turning that flag on for all devices, now it's safe to visiting bookmarks. I have exported bookmarks everyday since noticing the problem (after losing thousands bookmarks' name got cut) so importing that will force syncing all of bookmarks without name's limit.

As per comment#8: having clients with some have the new USS Sync Bookmarks will result in duplicating the bookmarks. This issue should be addressed before full launch of USS Bookmarks.

I have not experiencing duplication ( as per comment#8 ) of bookmarks after installing Chrome 71 so I considered it as 'fixed'. While on 70, some of duplicated bookmarks won't delete and crashes Chrome while deleting them. Then I have to delete bookmarks.json on my local profile. However the duplication itself doesn't occur after 71. But same bookmark with old name(*not clipped) still pops out sometimes, this may be a sync mismatch. |
