[User Feedback - Stable] 800%+ increase in reports about rendering issues in 68.106 since Aug 23 |
|||||||||||||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: 68.0.3440.106 OS: Windows, Mac, Linux What happens instead? There's been a big increase in reports about pages and page content not loading / fully rendering. "Some websites are not fully loaded and only the text is visible. The same page opened with Firefox shows the complete contents." "certain website have stopped working properly. namely netflix is just a white screen with text and some hyperlinks. as well as amazon prime video looking fine, however nothing reacts when clicked (play, trailer button, etc), so i cant watch anything on either site. i just noticed the youtube chat feature is getting a server error as well. all of this is new over the past day or so." Doesn't seem to be isolated to specific sites or OS. Looking at the crash logs, it seems like this is crashing only on one extension (over 99%). https://crash.corp.google.com/browse?q=expanded_custom_data.ChromeCrashProto.magic_signature_1.name%3D%27base%3A%3APartitionReallocGenericFlags%27+AND+expanded_custom_data.ChromeCrashProto.ptype%3D%27extension%27#-property-selector,-samplereports,+productname,+productversion:1000,+directory,-clientid,+operatingsystem,+url,+simplifiedurl,+extensions https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tampermonkey/dhdgffkkebhmkfjojejmpbldmpobfkfo?hl=en

Here is the crash bug related to extensions on current stable: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=877034

Sounds like this might be SI related? Adding V8's stab sheriff FYI.

Layout being broken even for main document doesn't seem like a Site Isolation issue. It looks more like CSS is not getting applied and the page looks strange, based on the screenshot in the initial bug filing.

Just realized that the extension causing crashes is TamperMonkey, which basically allows users to modify how pages look. I would not be surprised if TamperMonkey is intercepting web requests and if it crashes not delivering the responses to the renderer. Adding rdevlin.cronin@, in case it turns out to be an extension related issue.

Based on the extension manifest, it does have the capability of blocking requests:
"permissions": [ "notifications",
"unlimited_storage",
"tabs",
"management",
"webNavigation",
"webRequest", "webRequestBlocking",
"<all_urls>" ],

Actually, poking through some of the listnr feedback and looking at the screenshots, most folks have an extension that likely uses the webRequestBlocking API. I have seen AdBlock Plus on quite a few for example.

I think there's multiple things potentially going on here. For one thing, Adblock Plus had a bug that caused issues. https://twitter.com/AdblockPlus/status/1032583870485614592 (This is also the extension and the fix mentioned in https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/LCMk_dmzIdw and https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/99qem2/whats_wrong_with_my_chrome_im_assuming_its_chrome/) Issue 877034 is also interesting. It's an OOM crash from V8 in an extension process. If that extension (which looks to usually be tampermonkey) were to crash while trying to process a network request, it's possible the request would hang. This would result in the renderer not crashing, but no resources ever being delivered. I'll need to investigate more to see if that is the case.

M69 Stable promotion is coming VERY soon. Your bug is labelled as Stable ReleaseBlock, pls make sure to land the fix and request a merge into the release branch ASAP. Merge has to happen latest by 1:00 PM PT Tuesday (08/28/18) in order to make it to next week stable cut. Thank you.

This would result in the renderer not crashing, but no resources ever being delivered. I'll need to investigate more to see if that is the case. I've investigated this, and found that requests are resumed if the extension process shuts down, so this doesn't look like it could be the cause. Is it possible that all of these reports are from adblock plus users, where the issue was with their filtering?

Tested this issue on Windows 10 and Mac OS 10.13.3 on the reported version 68.0.3440.106 and the latest Canary 70.0.3534.0 and unable to reproduce the issue at TE end by following the below steps. 1. Launched Chrome and added the extensions 'TamperMonkey' and 'AdBlock'. 2. Navigated to few websites and could observe that the content is fully loaded and no crashes are observed. rdevlin.cronin@/nasko@ - Request you to check and confirm if anything is missed from our end in triaging the issue. Thanks..

> rdevlin.cronin@/nasko@ - Request you to check and confirm if anything is missed from our end in triaging the issue. AFAIK, we don't have any reliable repro steps (and aren't sure what caused this, or if it is an issue with a specific extension that has already been fixed).

This issue exists on current M68 stable and based on comment #19, we're not planning to block M69 stable for this. Pls let us know ASAP if there is concern here. Thank you.

Friendly ping! Could you please provide any update on this issue as it has been marked as a stable blocker. Thank You!

Not blocking M69 per comment #20, target fix for M70 or remove "RBS". Thank you.

melodychu@, are we still getting increased reports for this? It seems like it may have been an issue with a specific extension which, if that's the case, should hopefully have been resolved (or dying down) by now.

Hey all, jumping in for Melody. We took a look and are *not* continuing to see a spike here. As best as we can tell, this was probably an issue with a specific extension and is no longer reproducible. Removing RBS, marking as WontFix. Thanks for all the help with digging in! |
