Tried testing the issue on chromium version #68.0.3440.0 using Ubuntu 17.10 (as of now we dont have Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (GNOME Shell 3.28.2) to test this issue.) by following steps as per comment#0 but unable to observe any hidden icon on the menu bar.
Note: Unable to verify on chromium dot builds hence verified on #68.0.3440.0.

As this issue is reported on Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (GNOME Shell 3.28.2), adding 'TE-NeedsTriageFromHYD' label and requesting Inhouse team to look into the issue and help in further triaging.

Thanks..
