[MdRefresh] Regression: NTP is broken |
||||||||||||||||||||||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: Canary 70.0.3525.0 OS: macOS 10.13.6 What steps will reproduce the problem? (1) Open a NTP What is the expected result? Everything works fine. What happens instead? Tiles are missing and Fakebox doesn't work. This seems to be a regression in recent Canary.

Thanks for your report. Do you have any flags enabled?

No, nothing intentionally enabled. But maybe this issue can be related to 875275 which I reported a few seconds ago?

Can you try the following: 1. close all open NTPs & then open a new NTP - does the issue still occur? 2. close & re-open your browser - does the issue still occur?

I don't know if it could be related to issue 875275 , but the steps in #4 will help debug if it's a service worker issue.

Hi, I tried 1+2. In both cases it doesn't happen immediately. Only if I open some further NewTabPages, the "Can't open this page" info appears. Here is a screencast. I hope it helps. Thanks.

Have same issues on Win7 x64. Also other sites are loading with issues.

Thanks, the screencast is helpful. It looks like issue in the original screenshot doesn't appear anymore, but you occasionally see the "Aw Snap" screen. Do either of these occur on Beta?

Is suspect this is not NTP related. It does seem likely to be related to issue 875275 . Without any flags enabled in Canary, you're getting the Remote NTP, which loads like a webpage. I can replicate what you're seeing in Canary on the Remote NTP, but not on Local (ie with local-ntp flag on). When the local-ntp flag is not, I see issue 875275 for other sites (and occasionally they result in 'Aw, Snap', which the screencast in #6 shows for the Remote NTP). I cannot replicate on Beta with the Remote NTP, so it seems likely to be a change that landed recently. Marking this blocked on issue 875275 , so we can confirm that that is the true cause.

I went back to the Canary from 2 days ago, 70.0.3532.0, and confirmed that the Remote NTP doesn't have a loading problem there. Also noted that the service worker version is the same as the one used in my tests in #9. My suspicions that issue 875275 is the cause are stronger now.

There was a typo in comment #10 - the version number should be 70.0.3523.0 (there is no 3532 yet).

(ramyan@: Only fyi. I'm seeing the NTP without the blank tiles again. A screencast is attached. Let's see, if the NTP will work fine again, when the cause of issue 875275 is fixed. Thanks.)

(Sorry typo: "I'm seeing the NTP *with* the blank tiles again.)

Thanks mehmet@ - is that screencast of version 70.0.3525.0?
,
Aug 17
Yes, it is: Google Chrome is up to date Version 70.0.3525.0 (Official Build) canary (64-bit)

Thanks for #15. We'll wait on issue 875275 to be resolved.

New recently updated Canary Version 70.0.3525.3 fixed this issue. --> Duplicate of issue 875162. |
