chrome://history shouldn't coalesce entries with different page titles

Project Member Reported by tnagel@chromium.org, Aug 8

Issue description

Chrome Version: 69.0.3497.21 (Official Build) dev (64-bit)

Coalescing entries with the same URL but with different page titles hides some page titles which goes against the goal of making transparent to users what is stored in their history.

I generally agree.

This was likely an optimization when the history page was designed, to prevent spam of duplicate entries. However, it makes searching more difficult and thus ultimately the history page less useful.

It also interacts strangely with Clear Browsing Data. If you have two visits for a given day, we will only show one visit (and thus one timestamp) on the history page. If you use CBD with a time range that only deletes one visit, the history page entry now only contains the other visit, and the timestamp would change. It's as if a new entry appeared which wasn't there before.

We may look for a better compromise approach to be fully transparent while keeping the history page short, or we could simply drop the latter requirement.

Yes, I agree that this should be fixed.
