Deprecate Chromecast support in Chrome iOS |
||||||
Issue descriptionChromeCast will be removed from Chrome iOS, aiming for M-70 release. This is due to a few reasons: -Extremely low usage of the feature -Even lower usage now that YouTube has deprecated mobile web support for ChromeCast -Continual high testing burden for keeping ChromeCast supported -Potential for Xcode 10 (new version) to cause many bugs because of the previous integration of ChromeCast This is an open bug tracking the issue

olivierrobin@ we've disabled ChromeCast for M70, but the source code is still around. Do you know all the different areas that need to be removed?

I think based on the last thread with the cast folks, let's just keep it disabled for now and not delete any code.

olivierrobin@ is this something you can take on? Also if M-72 is too late (branches on Thursday) just let me know and we can aim for M-73. Also, the Cast team will turn off via server-side switch subsequently as well.

Yes, disabling it is probably a few (<10) lines of code

Disabling is easy (something similar to https://chrome-internal-review.googlesource.com/659835) Removing is somewhat more complex, as there's lots of js bits that can be removed that I'm not familiar with.

olivierrobin@ In your discussion with the Cast team, you mentioned that we shouldn't remove Cast support on our side before the server-side removal discussed. Can we still disable this on the Chrome side before server-side removal, or should we wait?

It sounds like the host change will happen in time for M73? In that case, should we make this m73 rbs?
