Chromevox: aria-describedby does not work when added to <input> or <textarea>

Reported by dack...@gmail.com, Aug 3

Issue description

Chrome Version : 68 (Windows 10) ; 67 (Mac High Sierra)
OS Version: Windows 10 ; Mac High Sierra

Other browsers tested:

Chrome JAWS 2018 (Windows 10): OK
Firefox JAWS 2018 (Windows 10): OK
    Edge NVDA (Windows 10): OK
Safari Voiceover (Mac High Sierra): OK
Chrome Voiceover (Mac High Sierra): OK

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Add aria-describedby attribute to <input type="text">, <input type="date", or <textarea>

2. Chrome Vox fails to recognize and read it

Chrome Vox will pick up and read aria-describedby if attribute added to parent <div> containing both <label> and <input> or <textarea> elements

With aria-describedby added to parent <div> (but not to <input> or <textarea>), all other screen readers (except NVDA) fail to read it

With same aria-describedby attribute added both to parent <div> and to <input> or <textarea>, NVDA reads it twice

Have not yet tested with other input types (checkbox, radio group, select, etc.)

All the documentation I've found recommends adding aria-describedby to the <input> or <textarea>, etc. element -- please consider aligning with the other major screen readers for simplicity and consistency

Tested as described above, but I couldn't reproduce it.

Can you clarify how you tested ChromeVox? Did you test it on Chrome OS, or did you test the extension?

The extension is known to be out of date and is no longer supported.

Tested with Chrome Vox extension on both Windows 10 and Mac OS High Sierra.

That is terrible news that the extension is no longer supported. It is one
of the best screen readers out there.

Please pass along my most emphatic urging to continue supporting the
extension.

The extension is free and cross-platform and suffers far fewer problems
than many other screen readers (including JAWS and NVDA to say nothing of
VoiceOver or Narrator).

My organization has an extensive web form application that we're trying to
make accessible. The ChromeVox screen reader was going to be our #1
recommendation to users.

Please continue supporting it!
