Add support for gzip to Files app |
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: 68.0.3440.76 OS: Chrome OS What steps will reproduce the problem? (1) Try to open any .gz file What is the expected result? The file is mounted in Files like a .zip or .rar file What happens instead? A list of suggested apps opens More info: I'm not sure if this is a regression, as I don't seem to be able to find any evidence of when it happened. There are some bugs from years ago that seem to suggest gzip support should exist (209318), but nothing on when or why it went away. Given that Linux container support is coming to Chrome OS, this seems like a rather large oversight.

We've never support .gz files natively, you can install WickedGoodArchiever to get this support. Will keep this as a feature request to add native support.

Is there any specific reason why support hasn't been added to Files? Given the OS already uses it for compressing feedback reports, it seems there's at least some implementation already present. It's also one of the most common compression systems used on Linux, and given that Linux application support is coming to Chrome OS it seems like this is an issue that may come up soon. I get why it wasn't in Files in the past, but with the current direction of Chrome OS I'm curious why we're still not supporting it in Files. It's also a bit odd that .rar is supported while .gz is not (I can't remember the last time I needed to open a .rar file, but I work with .gz files on a near daily basis).
