Most Likely Sites on NTP are missing favicons |
|||
Issue descriptionChrome Version: Chrome Android, 69.* (likely not recent regression) 1. Open NTP. 2. Observe that some of tiles in Most Likely area may only have "Initial" default icon, not their actual favicon. Expected result: all sites having their favicon, unless the site indeed does not provide one which is very rare for popular sites. Note the behavior is relatively stable - a given install of Chrome either has all icons shown, or just a few - and that set does not change often, so if one closes Chrome and opens it again they typically see the same [incomplete] set of icons.

I've investigated into this issue and here are my discoveries: 0. [On Android devices], if the icon size is smaller than 24x24, the fallback style will be used (color with first letter of the website). 1. Popular sites will fetch icons using the favicon urls in the data fetched from the server. Most of these should be fetched correctly with sufficient size. 2. Top sites, as part of history service, will be using favicons saved during navigations. These icons may not meet the criterion mentioned in 0. 3. Most Likely will behave similarly as popular sites. From several websites that I've seen that are not showing favicons in tiles, they're either: a. not providing any icons, or b. only providing 16x16 icon (i.e. https://www.wsdot.wa.gov/) If there are other websites (especially popular sites) having this issue, please reply with the URL to the website (and/or more information from chrome://ntp-tiles-internals) Closing this one as won't fix, please feel free to reopen. |
