My understanding is that the test mocking for layout tests have multiple possible fake devices that could be used.  I think this was about allowing tests to choose which mock device to use.  It gets more complicated with a test that requests multiple sessions with different options.

We now have a temporary mechanism ( issue 828321 ) and could use that. Eventually, we'll have to update this to reflect the outcome of the ongoing spec discussions.
