Users reports: Can't download Chrome Remote Desktop app from Chrome Web Store |
||
Issue descriptionUsers on Chromebook Community Form report that they are unable to download Chrome Remote Desktop app from Chrome Web Store. Threads: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chromebook-central/ljbyI37O5-o https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chromebook-central/vHSwsNvfB94 "I'm going to https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chrome-remote-desktop/gbchcmhmhahfdphkhkmpfmihenigjmpp?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher and when I click 'Add to Chrome' and then 'Add App' in the confirmation dialog box, I get a window saying 'An error has occurred' and 'Download interrupted' with buttons to Reload or Close (neither of which help). I also get a pop-up in the lower right corner of the screen showing a very long filename ending in .crx, followed by 'download unsuccessful' and '0 B, Failed - The server could not find the file. From clients2.google.com' Seems like when the app was last updated (June 25th) it may not have been put in the right place on the server... I was using this app before, both in developer mode and in regular mode before that, and it worked great."

From Jamie: "The most recent version of CRD uses a different CRX format (v3), but AFAIK, that should work fine with all recent versions of Chrome." This may be due to users running outdated versions of Chrome OS. Will see if users on the forum confirm that updating their Chromebooks resolves this issue.

I would not expect the most recently version of CRD to work with old versions of Chrome because we updated to a more secure version of the packaging format. Please ask these users to update their Chromebooks and see if that solves the problem.

Hi, I'm one of the affected users. Updating my Chromebook is not an option, unfortunately, as it's an older model (Samsung Series 5) and apparently no further updates are being provided for it. Is there any way I can get a copy of the pre-June 25 download for CRD? Everything was fine until I switched my Chromebook out of developer mode on June 27 and now I am completely screwed because I can't re-install CRD and my Chromebook is suddenly useless as a remote access tool (which is 90% of the reason I bought it). If I had any idea or warning that I was going to get cut off from my most-used application by switching after June 25 I would have left it the way it was. Someone on the forums suggested to me that CRD is actually going to go away at some point (!?!?!) and that I should try remotedesktop.google.com, which sort of works but is a totally unsatisfactory replacement because the browser intercepts hotkeys such as ESC and Ctrl-U (basically, anything which has special meaning to the browser). Totally frustrating trying to use Outlook on a remote machine and hitting ESC to close a message window only to have the remote desktop session pop out of fullscreen mode...

Unfortunately, there's no way to downgrade CRD to an older version via Chrome Web Store. I have attached a zip file to this bug, which you might be able to install on your Chromebook as an "unpacked extension". Instructions vary by Chrome version, so I'm afraid I can't help much, but you'll need to start at chrome://extensions, and there may be a "developer mode" checkbox on that page that you'll need to check before you can install from a zip file. Please note that this zip file is completely unsupported, and will almost certainly stop working one day. You are correct that https://remotedesktop.google.com is the recommended way of using CRD going forward, although the site uses some modern web technologies, so you may find that it doesn't work as well on older versions of Chrome as it does on the most recent versions (the issue with the Escape key and with most other browser shortcuts is resolved in M68, for example). I think the only long-term solution is to replace your Chromebook with a more recent model, but the zip file might be a workable stop-gap solution for a while.

Thanks so much for the CRD package! I've installed it and it's working fine (the process was pretty straightforward). I'm back to full functionality! I appreciate the notes about support etc, and I'll have to give the web app a try on a PC with updated Chrome to see how the usability is coming along. A replacement Chromebook is probably a good idea to plan for - I was a bit surprised and disappointed when this one informed me that I would no longer be able to install updates.

Cretin86, For future reference, Google's Auto Update Expiration dates for each Chromebook are available here: https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366 As explained in the article, the general policy is: "New software updates may be received later than the AUE date published, but will never be stopped sooner than listed. For Chrome devices this will be at least 6.5 years from launch of the hardware platform(2) (or in some legacy cases at least 5 years launch of the device itself)."
