microphone is missing from chrome address bar

Reported by triciar...@gmail.com, Jul 20

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/67.0.3396.99 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. open new tab in chrome
2. cursor is automatically placed in address bar
3.

What is the expected behavior?
Microphone should be displayed in the right side of chrome address bar.

What went wrong?
Michrophone is missing. This started a few days ago.

Did this work before? Yes not sure, but sometime in last week. Maybe 7/14 or 7/15

Chrome version: 67.0.3396.99 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 30.0 r0

There is a microphone in the google search box in middle of page. However, since the cursor is already in the search bar, it is disruptive to have to use the michrophone in search box rather than address bar. It forces the user go back and forth between the search box in middle and top of the window. This degrades the accessibility for people who must use voice instead of keyboard search. The search process is always faster, easier, and less confusing by starting search in the address bar and completely avoiding the google search box in the middle of window. Please put the microphone back in the address bar so that the search process is not disruptive to disabled users. Thank you.

Thanks for filing the issue!

Tried checking the issue on reported chrome version 67.0.3396.99 using Windows 10 with the below mentioned steps.
1. Launched Chrome
2. Opened a new tab
Observed that the focus is in omni bar and we were able to see the microphone symbol in search bar. Attaching the screencast of the same.

@Reporter: As we are not very sure about the expected behaviour we couldn't proceed in triaging it further, from comment#0 which conveyed that it used to work fine, so we even checked on 60.0.3112.0 but it has similar behaviour. Could you please let us know the location where microphone symbol is expected to be...!(as per comment#0). Any further inputs from your end (screenshot/screen cast) explaining the issue would help us to triage it further in a better way.

The mic should be inside the red circle I have drawn. It should be in the omnibox, just to the left of the star(bookmark icon).

As per the screen shot provided in comment#3 explaining the issue...Microphone isn't there in chrome address bar on reported chrome version 67.0.3396.99 and on the latest canary 70.0.3501.0 using Windows 10, Mac 10.13.1 and Ubuntu 14.04

As the issue is seen from M60(60.0.3112.0) considering it as Non-Regression and marking it as Untriaged. Hence removing Needs-Bisect label and requesting some one from respective team to have a look into this and help in further triaging it.
Note: Tentatively adding component UI>Browser>Omnibox, please change if this isn't apt.

Seems like this should have been gone since M46: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/6wIqlxPZq4o

So I think this working as intended. (There should indeed be no voice search icon in the address bar).

(Unless you are using a voice chat application, in which case there may be a gray icon to indicate mic permissions.)
They put the mic back in the address bar at some point because I have been using it every day for at least several months until it disappeared recently.

As per comment #8, marking it as untriaged.

Thanks...!!

I have confirmed within Google that this was removed (intentionally) years ago, as claimed in comment #6.

It's possible you were running an older version of Chrome (one that wasn't updated for some reason) or had an extension that provided a feature like this.

I'm sorry Chrome removes a feature you (and a good number of other people!) want. But overall it wasn't used enough, so they removed it to make a more streamlined browser.
Thanks for looking into this. It is strange though, that it appeared several months ago and then disappeared. I have never added an extension for this type of thing and voice extensions in play store currently do not look identical to the google mic. I have never disabled chrome updates.
Unfortunately, I used it because my hands are disabled. From an accessibility standpoint it makes my experience somewhat disjointed.
Thanks again for looking into it.
