Does this only happen with the cast icon? I can't repro with the cast icon, but that may be because there aren't any castable devices nearby, to the icon never anchors next to the bookmarks bar. (I also can't repro with other icons). Removing target and reducing priority given the nature of this issue.

With response to comment #4 : This issue only happens with 'Cast' icon. There is no need of any castable devices. Providing the Steps again : 1.Right click on NTP to open context menu and select 'Cast' option such that cast icon appears in omnibox. 2.Now just drag the cast icon to NTP 'Search Google or Type URL' search box and observe. Actual Result: You will see a url block sign on dragged cast icon and still cursor blinks in 'Search Google or Type URL' search box. Kindly refer the attached screen cast for your reference. Thank you ..!!

OK, thanks for the updates. We'll leave this open, but without any target milestone attached for now.

This issue is not limited to cast icon. Any extension icon can reproduce the same issue. However, I don't know if that is really a bug or not. You can drag anything to the fakebox eg. bookmark, extension and even some text outside Chrome. The reason why if you release the cast icon the search field gets disabled is because the cast icon itself can not be converted to a text. If you try dragging a bookmark to the fakebox the fakebox will be enabled and once you release it, the omnibox will have the url for that bookmark. Therefore, I think this is an expected behavior and I believe it is safe to mark it Wont Fix. wdyt?
