Changing left padding when omnibox gains focus makes it tricky/frustrating to select text

Project Member Reported by sky@chromium.org, Jul 12

Issue description

Chrome Version: 69.0.3488.0
OS: Win10

What steps will reproduce the problem?
(1) Paste this text into the omnibox: https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/master/ui/compositor/layer.cc#802 and navigate
(2) move focus away from omnibox.
(3) move mouse cursor to 'r' in 'compositor'
(4) click the mouse once, all still good, nothing moved.
(5) click the mouse again, notice 'r' is no longer under the mouse

What is the expected result?

I would expect (5) to not move the left padding of the text.

What happens instead?

(5) results in changing the left padding, such that 'r' is not under the mouse.

Changing the left padding during mouse clicks is jarring as it makes it mildly harder to select text in the omnibox.

This is a regression from previous behavior.

Correct me if I'm misunderstanding your report, but it's not the padding that's changing. Its that in the steady state we elide the scheme. On the second click we unelide it. Adding in the "https://" shifts the rest of the URL to the right.

One accommodate we designed for this case is that if you click and drag, it won't unelide until after you release the mouse (but only if that's the first click).

In short, this is probably WontFix. We spent quite a bit of time and iterations trying different approaches to the elision/unelision behavior and this one worked better than the rest.
By padding I mean the leading offset of the text in the omnibox. It seems it's a combination of removing "secure" and adding "https". This makes double clicking a portion of the text mildly tricky.

Feel free to close out if necessary. I filed this to at least make sure we considered the frustration this causes, but I understand there are tradeoffs.
