If you close the lid when an external display is attached, then the internal display goes away. Xwayland support in sommelier can't determine the ideal scale factor for X11 apps when this happens as it determines the ideal scale factor based on the preferred scale factor for the internal display.

Best solution is likely to send a preferred scale factor to sommelier as a global aura shell event that doesn't depend on internal display being used.
