Chromium doesn't show the video feed from a second webcam

Reported by rath...@gmail.com, Jul 6

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/67.0.3396.79 Safari/537.36

Example URL:
https://vmr.citi.com/webapp/

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Go to https://vmr.citi.com/webapp/ and click Settings
2. Select second connected webcam and save
3. Enter a meeting address (not public, will provide info upon request)
4. Join as guest

What is the expected behavior?
Video feed from the selected webcam is transmitted (and visible in "my own video" window).

What went wrong?
Video feed from the internal laptop camera is transmitted which is all black when the lid is closed. It doesn't make any difference which webcam I choose in the settings.

Did this work before? N/A

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? N/A

Does this work in other browsers? N/A

Resetting Chromium settings seems to resolve this for a while, but it comes back after a while. I guess this is because I connect/disconnect the external webcam from my laptop when taking it to the office and back home.

Thanks for filing the issue!

Tried checking the issue on reported chrome version 67.0.3396.79 using Ubuntu 17.10 with the below mentioned steps.
1. Launched chrome
2. Navigated to https://vmr.citi.com/webapp/ -> clicked settings
3. Under Camera drop down tried selecting HP HD camera and HP IR camera
As we do not have externally connected web cam to proceed from point 2 in C#0.

@Reporter: Could you please let us know if we need to have an external webcam in order to repro this and please provide any sample test meeting address to check and confirm the issue from our end.
I don't know if an external webcam is required. I have access to laptops with single internal camera and the issue is reproducible with an external USB webcam. I'll send you my meeting address via e-mail.

As per comment #3, an external webcam is required to triage this issue. Hence, adding label TE-NeedsTriageFromHYD for further triaging from TE-end.

Thanks...!!

Just to update, Mailed to rathann@gmail.com requesting meeting address which helps in further triaging of the issue. Adding Needs-Feedback label till we hear from reporter.

Thanks!
Thanks for providing meeting address to test this issue from TE end!..

Unable to reproduce this issue on reported version 67.0.3396.79 and latest stable 67.0.3396.99 using debian with steps mentioned below.

1. Navigated to https://vmr.citi.com/webapp/ , selected external webcam Logitech HD 1080p.
2. Entered meeting address and joined as Guest.

Observations: 1. Observing video from webcam when we select external webcam.
2. Observed video from internal webcam when we select Internal option. Attaching screeshot for reference.

@Reporter: Please check the issue on fresh profile which do not have any apps/extensions. Also please check the issue on latest stable 67.0.3396.99 and report us back the behavior.

Thanks!

@sindhu.chelamcherla@chromium.org I tried with another (office) webcam, also made by Logitech and indeed I cannot reproduce the issue with that one.

However, it's 100% reproducible, even on a fresh profile with my home webcam. This one is a Sony Playstation Eye driven by gspca_ov534 kernel module.

If I unload the uvcvideo module and the external webcam is the only one, then there is no issue.

So it looks there's something specific about my webcam that confuses Chromium.

I'm attaching a screencast to show the issue.

Adding "TE-Hardware-Dependency" as we don't have the mentioned Sony Playstation Eye driven by gspca_ov534 kernel module in order to test and confirm the issue.

Hence requesting some one from respective team to have a look into this and help in further triaging it.

Thanks!
@jbanavatu@chromium.org I suspect it may be enough to have an external USB webcam driven by another driver, i.e. anything not driven by uvcvideo, but I don't have yet another device to test this theory.

rathann@: Could you please provide the following from your machine when both cameras are present:

1. The output of the video tab from chrome://media-internals (note, this only populates after Chrome has at least once attempted to enumerate video capture devices). This should be a list of the available cameras and the formats they report as supported.

2. From chrome://webrtc-internals/ the output corresponding to the getUserMedia request made by your web app. In particular, I am interested in the constraints it requests.

@chfremer@chromium.org thanks for your interest. Here are the requested outputs:

I also tried running modprobe -r uvcvideo before starting Chromium and obviously it starts working as expected if the external camera is the only one visible to the OS.

By the way, I'm running Chromium 69.0.3497.92 now.
Thanks for the infos, that is very helpful.
I assume the getUserMedia requests shown from webrtc-internals correspond to requests where you had selected the /dev/video2 camera but it does not end up getting selected.

Potentially, the reason for that could be that in the constraints, the "ideal" for device id has lower precedence than the ideal resolution. Since the /dev/video2 camera only goes up to 640x480 the constraints processing in Chromium may end up favoring the other camera.

Have you tried using "exact" instead of "ideal" for the device id in the constraints?
You have  width: {min: 1280} height: {min: 720} and deviceId: {ideal: ["2feab7738a339e2a8629d97cfbf2acc637e151a14bac980c787982e5acf6b52d"]}

If "2feab7738a339e2a8629d97cfbf2acc637e151a14bac980c787982e5acf6b52d" is the camera that only supports up to 640x480, then the ideal deviceId will be ignored because it cannot satisfy the minimum resolution of 720x1280. If you use exact to actually force that device, then you'll get OverconstrainedError because you cannot satisfy the minimum requested resolution.

It looks like this is working as intended. You just have to update your constraints.

@guidou@chromium.org @chfremer@chromium.org Sorry, but I have no idea how to change constraints here. Could you point me in the right direction? Is there a Chromium setting to change? I didn't find anything in chrome://flags.

Also, can you explain why it works without any issues if the external camera is the only one visible to the OS?
re #18: In order to access the camera, some JavaScript code from https://vmr.citi.com has to call an API called getUserMedia, which takes the constraints as an argument, see e.g. [1] for an introduction.

The developers of that JavaScript code would need to update their code to change from setting the constraint for device id to "ideal" to "exact".

The reason it works with just one camera connected is that there is no longer a "better" camera available, so Chrome has no other option to choose from. "Better" here means, that the other camera can better satisfy the given constraints.
