What steps will reproduce the problem?
0. You need to be a Googler to repro this bug.
1. Open https://chat.google.com/.
2. Add Hangouts Chat to the shelf and make it open as its own window.
3. Open the newly created shortcut

What is the expected result?
Hangouts Chat opens as a window

What happens instead of that?
Not sure if this happens to all Googlers or only a subset of them. When I open chat.google.com, it redirects to an internal URL and then redirects again to chat.google.com (chat.google.com 🡒 an internal domain 🡒 chat.google.com).

When the redirect away from chat.google.com happens, app window is closed and the page loads in a regular tab.
