chrome.storage.sync.get yelds error: Corruption: block checksum mismatch

Reported by dellagus...@gmail.com, Jun 23 2018

Issue description

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/67.0.3396.87 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
Aparently, there were no particular steps that triggered the issue

What is the expected behavior?
chrome.storage.sync.get would retrieve stored data

What went wrong?
A user of my extension reported that features related to sync stored stopped working. I asked her to run the following javascript snippet on the console of a page presented by the extension:
chrome.storage.sync.get((r) => console.log(JSON.stringify(r)));

The response in the console was Unchecked runtime.lastError while running storage.get: Corruption: block checksum mismatch

A screenshot of the error is attached

WebStore page: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/podstation-podcast-player/bpcagekijmfcocgjlnnhpdogbplajjfn

Did this work before? Yes

Chrome version: 67.0.3396.87 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.0
Flash Version:

I'm the developer of the extension, I looked for similar errors online but could not find any reference.
It does not look like it is related to misuse of the storage API.

The error means the file in the user profile directory that contains chrome.storage data was corrupted.
I guess you can try deleting "Sync Data" but backup it somewhere first.
